When I was young, my parents only talked to me and my siblings in English. I knew a couple of words and phrases in Spanish but was not fluent. There were many family members who only spoke Spanish but it was very hard to communicate with them, especially my grandma and grandpa.

When my grandma started dating her boyfriend, he only knew Spanish. It was hard for me to build a relationship with him because of the language barrier. We would try to communicate in any way that we could. As the years went on I learned a lot of Spanish through him and helped him learn some English. It is because of him that I am able to keep a conversation going in Spanish.

Music has also helped me learn Spanish. Growing up, my grandpa would always have the radio on and would have "Tejano" and "Banda" music playing. At the time I didn’t know or like the songs but as I grew older I found myself starting to like it. Now, I listen to it on my own time. I recently went to a Bad Bunny concert and knew almost every song and could sing along to them.

In elementary school, my best friend was fluent in Spanish. She would talk to me in English cause she knew I didn’t know Spanish that well but at times would try and teach me words. I would also ask her to translate random words that I wanted to know. With other friends, we speak to each other in English but we do throw in some Spanish words or phrases in conversations sometimes.

Since I’ve graduated high school I’ve used less and less Spanish. I did my first two years of college back home where the professor would do lectures in Spanish for us to relate to a little better but I haven’t had the need to use Spanish since. I still do listen to Spanish music and talk to some family members in Spanish.
