I knew a couple of words and phrases in Spanish but was not fluent. It was hard for me to build a relationship with him because of the language barrier. We would try to communicate in any way that we could. As the years went on I learned a lot of Spanish through him and helped him learn some English. Growing up, my grandpa would always have the radio on and would have "Tejano" and "Banda" music playing. At the time I didn’t know or like the songs but as I grew older I found myself starting to like it. Now, I listen to it on my own time. She would talk to me in English cause she knew I didn’t know Spanish that well but at times would try and teach me words. I would also ask her to translate random words that I wanted to know. I did my first two years of college back home where the professor would do lectures in Spanish for us to relate to a little better but I haven’t had the need to use Spanish since.
