As everyone know, Sleep is an important component to our overall health. We must prioritize it. We might tell to ourselves: "Yeah, I always sleep my 8 hours... etc" Which some people do, but not everyone.

Now, Let's be real for a minute, sometimes it's not easy to sleep at the same time everyday or even sleep the amount of hours you're suppose to. However, It is not okay to make it habit, since it'll impact your overall health in the long run.

It is fine to stay up late once in a while. Maybe we stay up late studying, hanging out with friends or even going out, but we should't make it a habit.

My argument is that prioritizing and improving sleep quality is crucial for academic success even tho we ofter overlooked that fact.

Today, we are go over the relationship between sleep quality and academic performance, the importance of sleep for academic success, the cognitive impacts of poor sleep on academic success, negative and positive impacts of sleep quality and real data of sleep habits and academic performance in college students

Now, if you would like to improve your sleep habits, here are some tips that can help you set those habits:

Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. For children, have a set bedtime and a bedtime routine. Don't use the child's bedroom for timeouts or punishment.

Try to keep the same sleep schedule on weeknights and weekends. Limit the difference to no more than about an hour. Staying up late and sleeping in late on weekends can disrupt your body clock's sleep-wake rhythm.

Use the hour before bed for quiet time. Avoid intense exercise and bright artificial light, such as from a TV or computer screen. The light may signal the brain that it's time to be awake.

Avoid heavy or large meals within a few hours of bedtime. (Having a light snack is okay.) Also, avoid alcoholic drinks before bed.

Avoid nicotine (for example, cigarettes) and caffeine (including caffeinated soda, coffee, tea, and chocolate). Nicotine and caffeine are stimulants, and both substances can interfere with sleep. The effects of caffeine can last up to 8 hours. So, a cup of coffee in the late afternoon can make it hard for you to fall asleep at night.

Spend time outside every day (when possible) and be physically active.

Keep your bedroom quiet, cool, and dark (a dim night light is fine, if needed).

Take a hot bath or use relaxation techniques before bed.

(Healthy Sleep Habits | NHLBI, NIH, 2022)

Sleep quality has a lot of benefits that are directly correlated to academic success. Just to be more specific on what sleep quality is, sleep quality means how effective and restful was our night sleep, making sure that our body and brain had fully recovered.

Cultivating Health (2025) did a list of all the sleep quality benefits, like I said before "Sleep quality has enormous amount of benefits" which I'm only going to go over the most crucial one but I'll leave the list below.

The most relevant benefits for us college students would be an increase in focus, boost in memory and better learning capabilities.

When we get high quality sleep, since our cognitive functions are fully rested and ready to start performing, this will improve our focus in class, it will help us retain information more efficient, it improves our problem-solving skills, etc, etc.

That's why it is important to prioritize our sleep quality, so we can retain more information, learn more effectively, leading to deeper understanding of the topic/lecture, helping us improve our grades and achieve academic success!

Now, you might be wondering, "well... how do I get a high quality sleep?". These are some things you can do to help you get better night sleep:

Avoid late-night snacking, sugar, caffeine, and alcohol.

Turn off electronics, TVs, and computers two hours before bed. The blue light from these devices causes your brain to stay active. Turning them off a couple hours before bed gives your brain a chance to unwind and get ready for sleep.

Store all digital devices (e.g., smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc.) in an area of the house other than the bedrooms.

Sleep in a dark room because light stimulates our brains.

Use an alarm clock rather than your smartphone or tablet as a wakeup device.

Keep room temperatures on the cooler side – ideally low to mid-60s.

Aim for a consistent bedtime routine and sleep schedule to help your body stay on a regular track. Find a good time for you to go to sleep every night and wake up at the same time every morning. It's also important to keep that same schedule even on the weekends.

(Cultivating Health, 2025b)

Now, that you are aware of the benefits of sleep and know how you can achieve it... it is time to improve your overall life and health.
