awareness of current issues and to construct narrative embedded in particular time and place. With this in mind I will explore a chosen location and produce a HANDMADE SKETCHBOOK and VISUAL DIARY (PADLET).

I have 6 weeks to complete this assignment, including collating and producing my final piece.

I will be experimenting with a wide range of materials, techniques

and processes throughout the assignment and everything that I produce will be evidenced as part my final piece. I will

create pages for my sketchbook that evidence developed ideas, experimentation and final outcomes. Once I have all my pages I will select a range of images and collate them together to form a finished sketchbook. All initial ideas, research (artists, processes and

materials) planning, experimentation, annotation and reflection will be evidenced on my supporting PADLET.

I shall try and test out different ideas and experiment

constantly (beginning in week one). All design methods will need to be researched and explored (evidenced on PADLET).

After researching sketchbooks and artists diaries I will discuss my ideas with my tutor and then write a

project proposal. This will give an outline of what you I aim to do for the project.

The style was historial events – portraits, landscapes, photojournalism, live events, street photography, sport, close-up portraits.

There is either Event, or Story. Which leads to one of those; Architecture, Art, Cinema, Design, Fashion, Music, Nature, Performing Arts, or Society.

We were asked to choose a location and focus on the area throughout the six weeks.

I found the project very interesting and a good challenge for me to come up with ideas. It was very creative as we had to create our own handmade sketchbook. Finding resources to complete the book took some thought. 

 

I had to consider what materials to use, what would be strong enough to hold the book together, as well as the layout and it being good to look at. This was not a quick process, I tried different ideas to see which combinations worked well.

I attempted to paint the front and the back of the sketchbook but it didn’t work well. A second attempt to draw on the cover with an eye to support the title but it didn’t have the results I was hoping for.

 

My location was a children’s park. The first main topic was the cut-up images. I was intrigued by this because I saw examples on Pinterest which has images that inspire me to create the same but added in my taste. I like this because we get to play around with the photographs and see what works best. At first, I used scissor to cut the photographs but didn’t follow the outline as I wanted. I then tried the crafting knife which gave me the accuracy I wanted.

 

The next topic is painting. I was inspired by the photographer artist – Hayley Warnham. The kind of colours she used in her work has encouraged me to do the same. I like how she has painted in the portrait itself – it makes you, as an audience, look more intently. The research I undertook on this has shown me so many creative ideas. I used sharpie pens, paint, felt tip pen, chalks. I learned with paint that you would need to recoat them several times to get that strong look. 

 

I found mono printing quite a challenge as you would have to draw every detail there is from the photograph to get the look. It’s like a puzzle where if you missed a detail out the image wouldn’t look quite together. Most of the images I have of mono printing I used portraits as they were more successful. When I tried it with landscape, nature or objects it didn’t have the desired outcome the images were not as sharp but I continued with the portraits and I was satisfied with the result. 

 

I enjoyed this topic as I found it simple to create. I received lot of ideas from Pintrest. I rather use the thick thread than the thin one because with the thick one you were able to see and it would stand out whereas with the thin one you would have to resew a couples of time to get the thread coming out of the image strongly. 

 

 

To create the scanography images, we needed to go to our location and collect some objects we could use for this. I found cigarettes, water bottle, leaves, plastic bag, can lid, bottle lids, pieces of balloon, a plastic packet. I’ve also used my hand to add in more interest onto the image. Some of the images didn’t come out well as it was quite dark to see. We repeated this process by using a white background and that worked. Given the chance to do this again, I would collect bunches of leaves and include my hand being surrounded with leaves, same goes for the cigarettes. 

 

Inspired by the photographer artist – Wili Dorner whose work shows people wearing colourful hoodies and posing as an object in public. We were asked to create the same. I really enjoyed doing this as we got to play around with the people, into groups or on their own. Given the time to do this process again, I would bring in more people and have them doing team work activities.

I found this easier to do then the other tasks because I am so familiar with the phone. I enjoyed it and you are able to change things make mistakes and do it again. The images would be better if I used the paid app. 

 

I enjoyed the whole process, timing for me was difficult to keep on track. Some aspects took longer than I expected, it was harder than it appeared initially. My favourite task was the cut-up images because this gave me freedom to decide on the final look. I learned I need to plan a better rather than jump in to the task, sometimes this works and can help creativity but in this case spending more time thinking about what I needed, where to source it and how long it would take me to pull everything together.
