The binary system is the foundation of all modern computing. Unlike the decimal system (base 10) we use in everyday life, the binary system (base 2) uses only two digits: 0 and 1.

Why binary? Electronic circuits can easily represent two states: on (1) or off (0), high voltage or low voltage. Each binary digit (bit) can have one of these two values, and by combining multiple bits, we can represent larger numbers:

1 bit → 2 possible values (0, 1)

2 bits → 4 possible values (00, 01, 10, 11)

3 bits → 8 possible values (000, 001, 010, 011, 100, 101, 110, 111)

8 bits (1 byte) → 256 possible values (0-255)

This binary representation is the fundamental language understood by all digital devices.
