I would like to center my thematic unit around immigration. I want my students to understand what an immigrant and immigration is. In this unit students will explore coming to America, why others want to come to America and how to become an American. This is important because this helps students understand diversity and the importance of accepting different cultures and the differences in others.

It is important to understand the history of Native Americans and also understand their importance to history. Students will need to learn about Native Americans to be able to understand immigration. Students will be able to learn that most of our ancestors were non-natives. Students will be able to make comparisons of themselves and their families to Native Americans to see how our cultures relate. Students will be able to read about how things have changed over time and how colonialization began after Native Americans were impacted by settlers (immigrants). This week we will use visual readers and audiobooks to help find sources of information and demonstrate our knowledge of Native Americans by understanding their cultures, tribes, and way of living.

After students learn about Native Americans and are introduced to settlers, they should also learn that the United States is a country located in North America. For students native to the United Stats to better understand diverse learners such as ELLs, all students should be taught the reasons people from other countries come to the US. Students knowledge of immigration can be expanded as they are now able to identify reasons people come to the United States. Be mindful that some students in the class are part of a family that is in search of a better life in the U.S. Be sure to embrace reasons others move to the U.S.

Students should have an understanding of why people from other countries move to the United States. Students should also be aware that immigration impacts the United States in positive and negative ways. When students become aware of the reasons why people choose to leave their countries to come to the United States, they learn how to share with others, accept the challenges people face, and try to limit their impact on the environment. To help ELLs and ESE students this week, students will use visuals, role play, collaborate with peers, and have support from the teacher and classmates to be successful with the learning objectives.
