The last time I taught PE, I had an autistic student in my grade 8 class. She refused to participate with others, so had her own short routine then would leave the gym with an EA. She wouldn't even consider joining the whole group even though she was well-respected by her peers and would have been welcomed by them. I did not know how to convince her and the Student Support Teacher seemed happy she at least did her short routine. :(

Great topic!! I taught PE for 20 years and had a variety of students with physical and emotional challenges. I met with the EA's and resource teachers to find out the PE-specific accommodations. In certain situations, with the child's permission, I shared some information with the other students in the class and the classmates were always helpful and kind. I actually found it brought out the best in the classmates. There was a group who represented the special olympics who would come to PE classes and give us all a chance to learn about and play adapted games such as wheelchair basketball and games with balls that had bells inside. https://www1.specialolympicsontario.com/schools/
One important side note that I would like to share: I carefully and purposefully dealt with the sexual health units to discuss the vulnerabilities of citizens with challenges as they have a unique risk of being victims of sexual abuse. I created a handout and reviewed it with the entire class (it is very helpful for parents of young children) the entire class always took it very seriously and the peers were very compassionate as they made sure the challenged students fully understood what it all meant. Here is the delicate handout I made working with our Spec. Ed Department... https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3iHobCW9ctqTG8yRVhkMjBMWkk/view?usp=sharing&resourcekey=0-VcBdSObFf4ZJUMqrdBjD_A
