Event 1

A father is carrying his injured son, Ignacio, down a rocky path. They try to find some help from the locals in a nearby town called Tonaya. The father continued to carry him; he was getting tired of carrying his son due to him grabbing and pulling him but he didn't say anything.

"Ignacio didn't talk much ... as if it were a rattle." (Rulfo 38)

Event 2

Ignacio is now beginning to experience more difficulties. He is becoming quite tired and losing his vision. He is bloodless and colorless. Then he begins telling his father to let him go so he may "rest." In the meantime, the father is telling him that Ignacio would be killed if he leaves him with a doctor.

"His face...opaque light." (Rulfo 38)

Event 3

The father begins to belittle Ignacio by saying that his mother would curse him if he did anything else, which is the only reason he is there to save him. Additionally, he informs Ignacio that all he has ever done for him is embarrassment, trouble, and humiliation.

Event 4

We discover more about Ignacio's past and his faults.
His father informs him that his mother would have killed him if she had been alive today since he was an angry baby.

"And you were always...till now." (Rulfo 40)

Event 5

Ignacio begins to bleed more and more, which the father initially thought were tears, until he finally passes out. When the father arrives in the town after Ignacio dies, he succeeds in freeing his fingers from his neck and laying his lumpy body down on the sidewalk, where he hears dogs barking.
