The Second Amendment protects your right to own guns. But people disagree about this topic. Many people who say this have been disturbed. They think only certain people should carry and own guns. In the early days people wanted freedom of religion. That’s why the pilgrims left England. But some American colonies made people attend one church. Now, we can choose to practice any religion we want. We can express what we want to say. We can say what we want to say about the governments laws. But a long time ago, you would get arrested for saying what you thought about the British laws. But, we have limits to free speech. If someone yelled “FIRE!” in a place where there is no fire. Someone might get hurt. We can write anything we want in the press. A while back, newspaper writers would get thrown in jail for complaints about British acts. But the press also has limits. Many people were afraid that it made the national government too strong.

 On September 25, 1789, congress voted to approve the 10 amendments now known as the Bill of Rights. 

The men who wrote the Constitution had included a process for adding amendments. This proposal helped win approval for the constitution. 

However, many still feared that a powerful government would limit the rights of citizens.
