Learners take the leading role in their learning journey. They can do it independently or shared, locally or globally. They determine the pace at which they learn , and more importantly what and how they learn. Furthermore, they will determine their outcomes selecting particular resources and learning strategies and evaluate whether their learning process was successful.

Self-directed learning is what I want all learners to achieve. It is the ability to pursue the knowledge that you want to acquire regarding your passions and interests. There is a second part to it that fits in more with the work space and that is to be able to find information on how to do your job/tasks that you may be lacking and need to develop, without waiting for the company to provide training. It's about knowing what to do when you don't know what to do. Developing your executive functioning skills to a level where you are able to motivate yourself to do something. Student voice is similarly bound by factors beyond our control in the school environment. When learners are in the learning phase it is important to let them express their learning in different ways. Unfortunately because we are in an exam-based curriculum there is a duty to teach the learners how to take their learning, and the way that they expressed the learning, and convert it to an exam acceptable format. There is a flow between creativity and exploration and currently acceptable methods of displaying that knowledge in an exam setting.

Self-directed learning is the passion to pursue knowledge, without a teacher telling you to. In numerous report comments, e-mails to parents and teacher-parent evenings, I have made the statement, "Tom needs to take some responsibility for his own learning."I think one of the mayor obstacles to this in government high schools in South Africa (and possibly other countries), is that the curriculum requires a student to take a set of compulsory subjects that they don't all deem as part of their goals, interests or preferences. If students are given some sort of choice in class, this will result in them having voice in class and in turn this might ignite a fire for that ever evasive responsibility for own learning I'm after. It is important for a teacher to be creative in interpreting the set curriculum, to be creative in his/her pedagogy and to be creative in allowing that space for learners to own their voice in the classroom.

I think this is such a creative way to get learners to engage with content. I will definitely be implementing choice boards in my classroom. I am not sure whether it will work as assessments, but will try it as consolidation for now. I will also be a lovely way to make the Grade 9 Creative Literature task more creative. My biggest critique of this specific case study is that nearly the entire document is in English, but this is an Afrikaans assessment. I also think that some of the choices would be quite restricting in my teaching context. I will be thinking of some non-electronic choices.

Elements were unusual:
It was unusual for me to give learners so many options. At first I found it hard to think where a teacher will find one skill or standard to asses everyone on. When inspecting closely I saw all learners need to do number 5 and that would at least gives the teacher one activity that is the same for all to be marked on.

Elements struck you as useful and necessary:
I like the layout as it is simple and easy to understand. I like that different colours that were used to to help learners choose activities. Incorporating tips on design elements helps learners who does not know of these elements and stimulate learners which want to do visual activities. This choice board could even be used without internet access as learners could do all these activities on paper.

Where could elements be improved:
I did not understand why some numbers were in black. The rubric said oral in the corner, so I was not sure if this is only for the oral or would it be used for other activities as well. Maybe there should be a rubric for each activity or a general rubric. I would have given each block a action word title. Then I am in two minds about giving examples for each block. Good for some learners or activities but also takes away the research aspect as learners could go and find their own examples.

Lee-Ann Groenewald

Self-directed learning empowers students to take ownership of their educational journey by giving them the autonomy to set their own learning goals, choose their preferred learning methods, and explore topics of personal interest. It fosters independence, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills as students actively engage with the material. On the other hand, student voice and choice refer to the importance of allowing students to have a say in their education, from selecting topics for projects to providing feedback on teaching methods. This concept promotes a more inclusive and democratic learning environment where students' opinions and preferences are valued, leading to increased motivation, engagement, and a sense of agency in their learning process. Both self-directed learning and student voice and choice promote student-centered approaches that can enhance the overall educational experience.

The choice board case study is a compelling example of how student voice and choice can be effectively integrated into the classroom. By offering students a variety of learning options and allowing them to select activities aligned with their interests and learning styles, this approach promotes autonomy and motivation. It recognizes that every student is unique and encourages personalized learning experiences, ultimately leading to increased engagement and a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Moreover, it reflects the idea that giving students a sense of agency in their learning can empower them to take a more active role in their education, fostering lifelong skills and a genuine passion for learning.
