Puritans were highly religious individuals. Knowing this, they were very against any practice that could be seen as devilish. The Salem witch trials was an event that occured mainly in Salem Massachusets. These trials would determine if a woman was a witch based off purely opinion, and you could be put to death. This painting represents one of the trials, and depicts what the process would have been like.

As mentioned early, the Salem Witch Trials had the possibility of being deadly. Puritans often put people to death during this time under pure opinion and suspicion. The image above depicts the town gathering around a hanging, presumably of a convicted witch. This highlights how horrible this period was, as innocent people were hung for little to no reason. It also shows how public death was more common at the time, and in this case it was celebrated even though this woman did nothing wrong.

McCarthyism, or also known as the 2nd red scare, was the American fear of communism in the country. The cold war had a lot of people scared that there were communists in our own government, and it caused panic. This panic was similar to the panic faced by the puritans in the Salem witch trials, where there was mass hysteria about devilish antics. This image depicts the man McCarthyism was named after, Joseph R McCarthy. He got this name by claiming he had a list of communists working in the state department, and the nickname was given to the red scare by the press.

This is how Mcarthysim got its name. Joseph R M'carthy was a politician and US senator. Around 1950, Mcarthy claimed he had a list of people who were communists in our own government. This caused massive public hysteria. This is very similar to the devilish nature that the puritans were scared of way back in time.
