ASIAN AMERICANS NEED TO BE RESPECTED (source #1)

In the 60s races were treated badly. This started several
civil rights movements, and one of them just so happened to be the Asians.

“At the same time, the Asian civil rights movement was gaining momentum, partially inspired by the black civil rights campaigns of the ’60s. Many young, idealistic New Yorkers of Chinese descent, some of them radical leftists, began focusing on Chinatown’s many troubling issues and decided the time had come to demand equal rights and equal access to city services.”

I believe that this shows that the chinese immigrants wanted rights to be treated equally and not like outcasts. They were doing this because the chinese immigrants were kept out of having a job. Thus beginning their civil rights movement.

Then another movement for equal rights broke out regarding equality for asian americans.

“On a bright Monday in May of 1975, New York City’s Chinatown saw the largest protest in its history, and one of the largest ever by Asian Americans. Thousands of seamstresses, waiters, cooks, and students came out in force to demand an end to police violence. A reminder came over the Chinese radio that morning, and shopkeepers hung handwritten signs in their windows: “Closed to Protest Police Brutality.” At 9 am, most of Chinatown was shut down — an unprecedented sight on a business day — and a mass of bodies began marching from Mott Street down to City Hall.”

I believe that this shows the chinese immigrants thought they weren’t sending a big enough message and went ahead and created a massive protest, to show that they were sick of being treated badly and wanted as many rights as the typical american.

Graphic novel speaks about this subject but very lightly (source #3)

In the graphic novel american born Chinese a boy grows up and becomes a teenager. Throughout that life you see some of the white kids make rude remarks or gestures regarding the Asian ethnicity. An example of this would be how in page 38 where a white boy says "my mom said Chinese people eat dogs."

However at some point in the story the boy magically turns white and is treated much more differently. He has a normal life and has a lot more friends. this happens within these two pages
pg 118 and pg 51 - gets better friends and is respected by more popular kids and
the part where the Asian boy turns white does not come until later in the story.

I believe that this shows how the mere change in race can affect someone's life greatly.

These protests have allowed people to get those rights that they couldn't have beforehand.
