10. An explanation of your opinion of the book

Page 295
My opinion of the book is it was great and was very powerful. This book was powerful because it shows even if you have a disability or you look different then anyone else, it doesn't mean you don't have the same capability as them. Even though Melody has cerebral palsy, it doesn't mean she's not as smart as other kids her age. Throughout the book, she accomplishes great things, such as, finally being able to communicate, going to regular classes and excelling in them, and qualifying for the quiz team. This book was powerful because it shows how kids have been so mean to others with disabilities. It really shows us what it is like to be different and have a disability. I absolutely loved this book and learned so much from it. I would highly recommend it.

Pages 62 and 63
The book resembles an autobiography because how the author writes is like Melody is writing what has happened in her life and what is happening right now, also similar to a diary. The author writes about, in Melody's point of view, how she had a goldfish when she was young and then he hopped out of the bowl and died. She is explaining what happened at that moment and that time. The book consists of all the important events that have happened to Melody, that she remembers, and then what her everyday life is like right now.

Pages 18, 27, 39, 61, 71, 90, 133, 190, 222, 256, 257, 276, 284, 285, 290, 291, and 295
In the beginning of the book, Melody tells us about what happened to her when she was younger. To show this, for example, was in how she met Mrs.V, how Ollie (her fish) died, how she went to a doctor and he told her mom how retarded she is, how she got her baby sister (Penny), and how she goes to school and learns preschool material with other kids, like her, with disabilities. The rising action of the story is when the school starts inclusion classes that allows kids, like Melody, to go to regular classes and learn regular things. When she gets her Media-Talker, that overwhelmingly allows her to communicate so she can show people how smart she really is. The climax of the book is when Melody gets on the quiz team, and they win their first competition. Since they won their first competition, in two weeks they were headed to Washington D.C. to compete in the next level competition. In the falling action, Melody is all set to go to Washington D.C. and when they get to the airport, they find out their flight was cancelled and the rest of the quiz team caught an earlier flight and didn't call Melody to tell her what happened. Then the next day, Melody insists on going to school even though Penny is sick and her mom woke up with a migraine headache and has to go to work on her day off. When they were pulling out of the drive to go to school, Penny ran out and was hit by their car. At the end of the book, Penny ends up surviving and just go a broken leg, the quiz team apologizes for not telling Melody about the flight, and now Melody is writing her autobiography for her language arts.

7. Explain the theme of the book

Page 177
I think the theme of the book is people are more than what they appear on the outside, because in the book it showed how Melody did more than what anyone else thought she could do. They thought she was dumb, knew nothing, and would never be smart. People thought this because of her appearance and her disabilities. Melody proved all of them wrong when she made the quiz team and when she was finally able to communicate with the Media-Talker. Therefore, Melody showed others that she could accomplish what every other kid her age was doing in class.

Page 294
The main character, Melody, changes throughout the book because at the start of the book she can't communicate at all, she spends all school day in the H-5 room going over the alphabet and everything else you learn in preschool even though she's eleven. She has no good friends at school, and no one knows how smart she is. Over the course of the book, she gets a Media-Talker that allows her to communicate, she is able to go to regular classes and learns what other kids her age are learning. She also meets a girl named Rose who is very nice to her and becomes her friend, and she qualifies for her school quiz team. At the very end she is now writing her autobiography for her language arts class with her Media- Talker. Throughout the book she is able to do more things and has opportunities like the quiz team and the Media-Talker that will change her life.

Pages 23, 29, 92, 133, 190, 256
The book Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper is about a 11 year old girl named Melody who has cerebral palsy and has never talked, but has a photographic memory. Her whole life people have thought she was a retard and would never amount to anything, and for that reason she goes to school everyday and learns preschool material with other kids like her. When Melody goes into fifth grade, her school starts a program that allows Melody and kids like her to go to real classrooms and learn what other "regular" kids are learning. Melody is finally able to show everyone how smart she really is in these classes with help from her new Media-Talker that allows her to communicate. Melody ends up getting on the school's Quiz Team but then is left behind when the rest of the team goes to D.C. to compete.
