A real estate tycoon called Harvey Henderson Wilcox and his wife Daeida went to live there on the agrarian mountain just outside the big city Los Angeles. His wife had met a Dutch woman that has called her own manor house ‘Hollywood’. She liked the name and used it also for their estate on the mountain, that’s why it nowadays still called ‘Hollywood’.

At the beginning of the 20th century, many film producers moved to Los Angeles to make movies. This is because Thomas Edison in New Jersey made strict rules for producing movies. In Los Angeles they were independent . Also its nice weather and the varied terrain was ideal for making movies.

The well-known Hollywood letters on the top of the mountain was intended to advertise new homes over the city in 1923. There was actually ‘Hollywoodland’ spelled. In 1943 was the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce allowed to change it to ‘Hollywood’.

The emergence of the television industry in 1950 Hollywood started to change. All around the city there came television- and music recording studios . But the important film adaption, effects and props, still remain in Hollywood.
