The Puritans beliefs came from calvinism which came with a very strict set of beliefs, they did not believe in flashy clothes and wore only black and white. They were fearful of witches and witchcraft because they thought it was a direct connection to the devil himself. The Salem Witch trials were held which accused people of witchcraft and communicating with the devil, most of the people accused were innocent. As many as 200 people were jailed and 19 were hanged as a result of them not confessing to witchcraft. Arthur Miller wrote a play, "The Crucible", which talks about the trials and he wrote it because when people were hunting for communists he thought it was similar to the trials and wanted to show, he was accused of being a communist but he rejected all of what was accused against him. This topic is very interesting because it shows how people under fear can be to people including people close to them.
