The most interesting but confusing idea from Descartes was that he was an incredibly logical man but became so interested in explaining things like the mind and God, two ideas that are highly debated as to be absent from the physical world. Descartes' explanation of the senses add a unique mistrust in the world around us, questioning the validity of what is perceived as the subjective reality to us, the very thing that he wishes to verify through mathematics. He leaves the question of whether or not we can trust anything since it is seen, heard, felt, and experienced through the senses.

The most interesting thing about the Descartes discussion we had today would have to be how Descartes believes that our senses can be easily deceived and therefore the observations that we make with those senses aren't one hundred percent trustworthy, that leads to a lot the justification of the creation of conspiracy theories because if you look at most conspiracy theories, they're are based on the idea of not being able to make conclusions off of the information that ourselves as individuals have. For example, the moon landing the is something that is often questioned as whether it is real or not because it is possible that the government lied to us, we haven't been up there ourselves to confirm, so the only information we have about easily can be false because the only other way to know the truth is to go up into space ourselves, which is unlikely for the average person. This is is similar to how the data gained from our senses can easily be false, simply because we have no secondary way to know things about our world.

The most interesting thought was one Jillian brought up to refute Descartes' "I think therefore I am" argument. She said that an evil demon or something else could also be manipulating/creating one's thoughts, just as it might be doing with reality

I thought the most interesting thing we talked about was when we started tying Descartes to social media and this perception of ourselves that we want people to see. I think that's interesting because now and days everyone is always claiming that they are who they are and don't need anyone's validation, but at the same time they crave it from the people who follow them and feel the need to validate to people that they are the person they express to be through their posts on social media. It makes me wonder which of these truths is actually true.

One of the most interesting thing about the Descartes discussion I had with my group today would be the conversations surrounding Descartes main ideas "I think therefore I am" and "what can I know." My group and I were able to explain how Descartes ideas are all over the word today; such as in North Korea or even with Conspiracy theories. The overarching belief that God is the most perfect being, who made me, thus I am perfect is just like this. We also talked about how conspiracy theories can go along with this belief. People think they are right, and they have their own information to prove it, wether we believe it is right or not.

If I can believe whatever I want does that mean I can't believe what everyone else has to say? The whole argument brings up the question of truth. How can whatever you know be true but more importantly how can you know that anything you believe is wrong?

Something interesting that Mike brought up yesterday was that Descartes’s outward belief in God did not fall into the pattern of the rest of his philosophy. Our group discussed the point that the church had large control over independent thought and that Galileo was a great thinker put under house arrest for publishing work that strayed from the church. So, it is possible that Descartes’s belief in God was established under fear of the church, rather than his own belief.

The most interesting thing we talked about was that Descartes believed that everything had to be proven for it to be true. However, Descartes stated that we believed that God is real because we were born with that knowledge. This is interesting because it completely contradicts his beliefs that we need to experience everything for it to be real but we have no proof that God is real.
