Activism is a broad term that refers to intentional actions taken by individuals or groups to bring about social, political, or environmental change. Activists promote and advocate for specific causes, often with the aim of challenging existing norms, policies, or power structures they perceive as unjust or problematic.

Activism can take many forms, including protests, demonstrations, rallies, direct actions, lobbying, social media campaigns, petitions, boycotts, and more. It encompasses a wide range of issues such as human rights, environmental conservation, racial justice, gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, workers' rights, indigenous rights, and many others.

Activists often seek to raise awareness, educate the public, spark dialogue, and mobilize others to join their cause. They may engage in public advocacy, use creative methods to gain attention, or employ civil disobedience as a means of nonviolent resistance. Through their actions, activists aim to bring attention to injustices, challenge the status quo, and ultimately bring about desired change.

While activism can be pursued individually, it is often carried out collectively through the formation of social movements or organizations dedicated to a specific cause. These groups campaign on local, national, or international levels, often leveraging public pressure and media attention to influence policymakers, corporations, and society at large.

Overall, activism is driven by a desire to create a more equitable, just, and inclusive society by challenging oppressive systems, norms, and policies. It embodies the belief that individuals have the power to effect change and play an active role in shaping the world they live in.

1. “If we must die, we die defending our rights.” – Sitting Bull

Sitting Bull (1831-1890) is one of the most famous Indigenous leaders in history. As a Hunkpapa Lakota leader, he resisted government policies and fought for Native rights. After years of evading capture and struggling with starvation, Sitting Bull eventually surrendered. He worked at Buffalo Bill’s Wild West, where he became a celebrity. When he returned home, government authorities grew fearful of the Ghost Dance movement, a religious movement that promised the renewal of the earth, resurrections, and an end to oppression. Because of Sitting Bull’s influence, police tried to arrest him and prevent him from joining the movement, but he was killed instead. His remains are buried at Mobridge, South Dakota, his birthplace.

2. “There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” – Elie Wiesel

Elie Wiesel (1928-2016) was a human rights activist and author. His most famous book, Night, is a memoir of surviving a concentration camp.

For activism, I have not experienced a lot. Because of the differences in the culture of the country, our country is not very supporting us to march or protest unfair or unjust events.

After research and collection, I found similar political activism in China's history - The May Fourth Movement in 1919. Many younger college students keenly marched and demonstrated in the streets to against the government signing the unreasonable treaties. This behavior successfully stopped the government to giving up their ruling power.

Nowadays, I view plenty of clicktivists on the Internet. They announce some unfair or unjust events or news by thumbing up or forwarding. More and more people may know these negative effects through expand rapidly. After that, the relevant authorities will quickly investigate these phenomena based on crowd pressure. For example, some female college students are tricked to poor mountain areas; some officials are heavily corrupt and so on.

But clicktivism also has some bad problems. First of all, there will be numerous false news, which will waste a mass of human resources to investigate; secondly, there will be some bad speech, because the Internet does not control anyone's speech, this may cause some negative effects on the Internet; finally, people just against on the network, and do not take practical actions.

Therefore, I think Activism still needs people to against some unreasonable, unjust, and unfair phenomena on their own, this may help them deeply understand that the importance of activism. So as to draw the attention of the national government and make this society a better place.

Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was a Mexican painter who combined realism, surrealism, and fantasy with icons from her Mexican culture. While visiting the U.S. with her husband, Diego Rivera, Kahlo wrote to a friend that she was interested in the industrial and mechanical developments of the U.S., but she felt “a bit of a rage against all the rich guys here, since I have seen thousands of people in the most terrible misery without anything to eat and with no place to sleep.”

Kahlo’s artistic career was a success despite a lifetime of physical pain and a difficult and famous husband who overshadowed her during her lifetime. She proudly wore her Mexican heritage in her clothing, jewelry, and hair styles, and readily expressed her distrust of authoritarianism and Capitalism. She was disabled, bisexual, outspoken, and revolutionary. Her art resonates with feminists, politically-active people, diversity advocates, and anyone who has experienced physical or psychological pain.（Frida Kahlo’s Art through the Lens of Magical Realism,2020）
