When trying to get their information , I instinctively tried talking to their interpreter but they have corrected me as I should talk directly to the patient themselves instead. This is where I've learned when coming across these barriers in communication as I wasn't aware that this can seem dismissive to the patient themselves.

A deaf patient came in and was struggling to hear me through the mask - I had to remove my mask and allow him to lip read whilst still maintaining a safe social distance. Speaking loudly, clearly and using hand gestures enabled me to convey the information needed and allow him to receive his injection.
