"Yes, suh. I felt right sorry for her, she seemed to try more'n the rest of 'em--" (264). Tom Robinson took a major risk with practicing empathy, and we see by the outcome of the trial and his life that it was ultimately his life that he risked by practicing this empathy.

In this scene where Atticus is explaining why he must defend Tom Robinson, and Scout asks "If you shouldn't be defendin' him, then why are you doin' it?' 'For a number of reasons,' said Atticus. 'The main one is, if I didn't K couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again."(Lee 78) Atticus is stating that it is his responsibility to defend Tom in court, otherwise he wouldn't be able to resume his life as he is.

They create our personalities and how we treat others.

" The Ewell's lived behind the town garbage dump in what was once a Black mans cabin. The cabin is plank walls were supplementing with sheets of corrugated iron, its roof shingle the tin cans hammered flat, it's only it's general shape suggested it's original design: Square, with 14 rooms open in your shotgun hall, the cabin rested on easily upon for your regular lumps of limestone"(Lee 227). This shows that the Ewells live in a dump, so they are not high class people who are respectable, or respect anyone or what they think.
