Harassment, intimidation, and bullying all are influences that can have a negative effect on your health. Bullying can cause emotional and verbal abuse in addition to just physical. According to the text, "Physical signs of bullying often disappear long before the psychological effects of emotional, verbal, or electronic bullying disappear" (Health 7).

Regarding influences to ones health, it is important to understand how to adapt health messages and communication techniques to a specific target audience. For example, if a commercial is attempting to persuade teenagers to get more exercise and eat healthier, then they will probably adopt that message so that teenagers will want to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Family, culture and peers all can have a positive and negative effect on health behaviors. Our peers have a huge influence over our actions, whether we know it or not. The text gives an example, "a kid in the neighborhood might want you to shoplift with him" (Health 4). We often look up to our peers and want to be like them.

The perceptions of norms and values influence our health behaviors. Influences such as the media, advertisements, school, society and laws all impact how we act. For example, the media sometimes suggests that unprotected sex and underage drinking are cool and smart. Just as the text states, "some messages can slowly begin to sink in and make risky behaviors such as underage drinking or unprotected sex seem attractive" (Health 9).

Our community and the technology and media we subject ourselves to have a large impact on our personal health behaviors as well. School is definitely a large and important influence for young people. In addition, ones community also has an influence on their health behaviors. According to the text, "There is something about living in a poor neighborhood that places adolescents at risk for engaging in risk behaviors" (Health 7).

Some of these influences discussed previously have had a negative impact on my health. One of these influences is my peers. Some of my friends in recent years have started going out to parties (drinking, smoking, etc.), and have tried to pressure me into trying some of these dangerous behaviors. Although I haven't started doing these things, their influence on me hasn't been too positive. Some things I could have done to avoid this and to encourage healthy behavior was to find a new friend group. Also, I can try to talk to my friends and kindly explain to them that they don't need to start doing these activities just because they think it is the "cool" thing to do.

Another example of an influence that has had a negative effect on my health is the media. The media often shows girls with perfect bodies subtly suggests that other girls must look like them to be beautiful. Body-image is a problem that many girls struggle with and it can lead to many unhealthy behaviors. In order to prevent this and to help other girls see that they don't need to change themselves, I could stop watching/viewing the media that makes this suggestion. The healthy choice is to eat what is healthy for your body, but also to allow for balance, and to exercise, but not too excessively.
