The death of Hannie Schaft

Hannie was arrested in Haarlem, her birthplace. As she was transporting a secret document for the Resistance, she was brought to a prison in Amsterdam On March 21st of 1945, where she was interrogated, isolated, and tortured.

For context, she dyed her hair and wore glasses in order to hide and continue her Resistance work long before she was caught. Later on, she was identified by the roots of her red hair by her FORMER colleague, Anna A.C. Wijnhoff.

Two dutch Nazi officials shot her on April 17th 1945, one shot Hannie close range, wounding her. And the other managed to kill her after she said her last words- "Ik schiet beter" (I shoot better)

She was shot 3 weeks before the war in Overveen ended.

The two sisters, along with their comrade, Hannie Schaft, joined the Dutch Resistance. The two started out handing Anti-Nazi pamphlets and hiding a Jewish couple in their home. The sisters placed dynamite on railroad tracks and bridges, smuggle and aid Jewish children, helping them escape concentration camps and even the country. The girls also managed to kill Nazi/German soldiers by taking them on a "stroll" in the woods and seducing them, ultimately leading them to their deaths. Freddie also managed to kill one of the soldiers on her bicycle.

The Oversteegen sisters were heavily affected by Hannie's death as they had to deal with the trauma of not only losing such an important person in their life, but also having to kill people and suffering with PTSD, depression, and other war ailments, post war. Especially for the rest of their lives.

Then they ran into someone – which was made to seem a coincidence, but he was one of ours – and that friend said to Truus: “Girl, you know you’re not supposed to be here”. We apologized, turned around, and walked away. And then shots were fired, so that man never knew what hit him.”

Freddie mentioned that getting married and having children helped her cope with the trauma of the war. She said that occasionally, she would envy Truus for gaining more attention than her, but then she remembers that she was a necessary and essential part of a Dutch Resistance, and to her, knowing that was more than enough.
