Golden rice can have environmental factor that affects biodiversity.

First of all, the threat occurs when the GMO crops breed with non-GMO crops. This will harm the environment when the pollen of GMO crops gets into the non-GMO crops because it will result in GMO contaminated crops (Genetically modified organisms). Moreover, it is possible that the unwanted gene being transferred to wild species and causes loss of biodiversity or be different from the traditionally bred commercial varieties (Golden rice and its environmental impact).

Secondly, golden rice would become weeds because of the new gene. More weeds are usually not good to the agriculture, and requires many management practices to be dealt with (Golden rice and its environmental impact).

Thirdly, golden rice would harm animals in wild life. Since it has resistance to pesticide and herbicide, farmer would use them more in order to defend them from the insects and other animals. More uses of chemicals will harm humans and animals who eat golden rice, and also endanger the environment (Genetically Modified Organisms).

Since the effect of golden rice is unclear, many opinions come up for debating its advantage and disadvantage.

Advantage includes positive health effect. As you can see in the left paragraph, it can prevent vitamin A deficiency and vision issue, and reduce high blood pressure and high cholesterol. This can prevent millions of deaths (What is golden rice).

On the other hand, disadvantage includes allergies and antibiotic resistance. Other than the negative effect on human health, golden rice can also harm environment and biodiversity. In addition, anti-GMO people say that the positive health effects on human body is not guaranteed to everyone, and it has some safety issue. They also claim that the "Golden Rice is not a 'practically viable crop solution,' is 'environmentally irresponsible,' and could 'compromise food, nutrition and financial security'" (McDivitt). In addition, the golden rice consumes many times and moneys to be modified and therefore many people disagree producing it (McDivitt).

These advantage and disadvantage lead many people to debate whether the golden rice is actually good or bad for human (Genetically Modified Organisms).

GMO means genetically modified organism, which is an organism whose genetic is changed by the genetic engineering techniques. Golden rice is one of the genetically-modified crops. Its gene is modified in order to produce beta-carotene which can be converted into vitamin A when it digests in human body.
Why have we allowed this to happen?

People need vitamin A for healthier skin, immune system, vision, etc. Vitamin A deficiency can also make a risk of chronic condition and develop malnutrition, diseases and blindness. This is why the beta carotene is added in rice in order to increase vitamin A for human body.

For making golden rice, a bacterium called Erwinia from daffodils is necessary. This can create a gene that can give an ability to make beta-carotene. These genes are inserted into plasmids (small circular DNA) that occurs inside of the bacterium called Agrobacteria. They are then added to rice embryos so that they can transfer the genes that makes beta-carotene. Finally, the transgenic rice should be crossed with normal rice in order to produce more golden rice. (The Golden Rice Technology)
