Greetings, everyone! Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Rae Anne Francisco, but you can call me Rae. I spend my spare time binge-watching movies or series on Netflix and play mobile games with my siblings such as Mobile Legends and Wild Rift. These are just some of the things I do in order keep my sanity especially when I need to take a break, of course aside from taking a jolt of caffeine (Hello, coffee lovers!). Pre-pandemic time, my family and I used to go on vacation almost every summer in Laguna and stay at our relatives’ resort because my dad’s hometown is in Los Banos, Laguna. We also travelled different places from North Luzon such as Baguio, Zambales, Subic, Pampanga, Tarlac, Baler and on South such as Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, and Quezon. All of these were done using private transportation, perhaps I must say that I am really exposed to using Land transportation and I really love road trips especially if I am with my friends or family. Despite being exposed to this mode of transportation, I know that I still have a lot to learn from this course particularly the challenges that we are facing in Land Transportation, ongoing developments to cope with these challenges, infrastructures that are ongoing and those that are yet to be built, and a lot more. I am hoping that we can still entail fun while learning for us (Faculty, Professors and Students) to be eased amidst the crisis we are facing.

On the other hand, looking back on my Tour 161 class, I have learned about the different modes of transportation available here in the Philippines and how it serves as an integral part of our tourism industry, allowing visitors to reach and to move around places or destinations. One of it is the Land/Surface Transportation. It became an indispensable tool to interconnect towns, urban communities, rural cities, important destinations and quite had been a tool to measure progress. Active transport, Personal transport, Public transport, and Shuttle service can be associated in this mode of transportation.

Reminiscing one of my most memorable land travel experience, it was way back when we went to Baguio, aside from the picturesque landscape view of the nature while traversing on the destination, I remember the feeling of being extra nervous when my Dad had to drive at midnight on Kennon Road (which is considered a hazardous road in the Philippines) while we were on our way home. It also awakened my fascination of why certain roads are built like zigzags instead of just a straight horizontal or vertical road. I am really fond of road trips and perhaps, that explains why my favorite land transport mode is private transport.

I made my own illustration of the possible implications when we start adhering with the Sustainable Transport Framework. I condone the idea of Avoid, Shift, Improve. I personally believe that we have options to consider so we can fully maximize the use of different land transportation modes. By this, we will be able to mitigate its negative impact not just on the environment; even on our everyday lives.

++ My favorite pastime is watching movies and series!!! I also love hanging out in cafes & drinking iced coffee and working out. I get super happy whenever I have the chance (& money) to travel. I prefer land and air travel compared to sea travel, but I LOVE THE SUN & BEACH!!! 🌞🌊 Also, I get super impatient when the road trip gets too lengthy.

What interests me the most about tourism and transportation is how we can improve accessibility in terms of public transportation in the Philippines. This has been one of the major issues in the country ever since, so I am curious as to what proper approach can establish the cooperation of both public utility vehicle operators and commuters.

You can listen to this song while reading:)

Paris Evening Walk and Bike Ride
Paris is an iconic tourist destination. It is a place for mass tourism and so it is expected for the streets of Paris to be filled with millions of tourists in addition to its local population. This then relates to a high transportation demand that should be paralleled with Paris’ transportation supply. The “Paris Evening Walk and Bike Ride” video showed that Paris has a multimodal road design. Their road ways are quite impressive seeing that there are spaces for almost all forms of transport, may it be for trains, buses, cars, scooters, walking and cycling. The video also highlighted how Paris has an efficient road design for active transport. The narrow roads between establishments were utilized mostly by cyclists and pedestrians but even in major roads, beside car lanes are cycling and pedestrian spaces. Paris is a destination where one can walk and cycle from one point to another and it is commendable how the destination was able to design it that way. I also observed how cycling was further promoted in the city with a line of bike rentals available and bicycle parking present almost everywhere. Paris was able to establish walking and cycling as a pleasant experience which is a progressive notion considering how these transport modes are usually regarded as a hassle despite its numerous benefits to the health of one's self and environment.

This video was quite lengthy yet mesmerizing. It didn't just showcase the infrastructures for walking and biking. The video served as a virtual tour in Paris, France. This is one of the destinations I want to visit someday and the video made me feel as if I was in the shoes of the videographer. It can't be denied that a photo in every corner shown in the video is IG worthy. Paris is truly a must-visit destination. Going back to the pedestrians and bike lanes, people can really enjoy walking around and biking/scootering in a calm environment. There were enough space for bike/scooter lanes. Active transport in Paris is truly active.

I must say that I enjoyed watching the video that I wasn't able to notice that it is quite lengthy indeed. It felt like I am watching a virtual tour for Paris. Walking and biking as means of active transportation is actually a fun and healthy alternative because it's like hitting two birds with one stone; You get to enjoy traversing the streets of Paris with tons of historical places and stories while exercising every limbs of your body while walking and cycling. It has always been my dream to go to Paris because of its romantic vibes, well undoubtedly that's why it was dubbed as 'The City of Love' and the very famous Eiffel Tower. I failed to notice that I can also enjoy this types of activities. In line with this, perhaps I can share my observations with regard to the video. I can see that it can be compared to locally available destination here in the Philippines which is the Intramuros in Manila. Pre-pandemic era when I went to Intramuros and enjoyed church-hopping and learned very much of the historic places within the walled city. I also get to experience renting a bicycle and used to go to one museum into another. In the video, I saw some people that also have scooters in Paris and I remember that time when I really queued for the available GrabPH scooter rentals in Intramuros that is actually free of charge at that time but failed to try one because of the cut-off. As far as I can remember, it was a partnership by the DOT and the President of Grab Philippines for tourist to experience a fun yet eco-friendly way of exploring the historic destination.

Aside from these, I was also able to compare that in Paris they really have streets and spaces that are intended for people to utilize wherein in the Philippines we also have these spaces but the difference is that motorists still cross these paths. Every "eskinita" that they deem as passable, they will force themselves to fit.
