This padlet helped me learn more about the celebration of El Día de los Muertos. I learned that the people celebrate it to remember the people that are no longer with them. Also, they give "ofrendas" or objects in the symbol of water, fire, wind, and earth to prepare the spirits for their trip back to "El Mundo de los Muertos". The people sing and give things to the spirit depending on what the person liked when it was alive. I like this tradition because people celebrates and remembers the people that are no longer with them.

Día de los Muertos is a festival celebrated on November 2nd by people, increasingly throughout the United States.Day of the Dead is not a sad or scary occasion, but a spirited holiday when people remember and honor family members who have died that they have missed. All of this is part of the philosophy that death is not something to be feared. People celebrate in their homes, creating altars(like the one below) that display portraits, favorite foods, and special possessions of their loved ones.

I learned that Día de los Muerto is celebrated on November 2nd to honor and remember the dead. The tradition was brought to the region many years ago by Spanish conquistadors. Family members that have passed are remembered by ofrendas. An ofrenda (a small alter honoring an individual) is usually decorated with meaningful objects, calacus and calaveras (skeletons and skulls), along with the four most important elements, fire, water, wind, and earth. It is thought that on this day, the dead awaken from their deep sleep and return home on a path of cempasuchitl (a marigold flower native to mexico). Although it seems like a day to mourn it is not, it is a day to celebrate.

On this altar, many significant items are placed, including objects that represent earth, fire, water, and wind, which are four important elements.

2. Celebrating the dead was very important for Mesoamericans well before the Spanish arrival, and the combination of their customs and the Spanish customs resulted in Dia de los Muertos. One of the reasons Catholicism became widespread among the native peoples was because of syncretism, where the Spanish changed the native peoples’ rituals slightly to correspond with Spanish and Catholic holidays and rituals.

3. The Aztecs, Mayans, and Toltecs dedicated specific times to honor the dead, depending on if they were children or adults, and how they died. These became celebrations where the dead would be honored and get gifts.

1. Dia de los muertos is a holiday that was created by the blending of an aztec ritual and catholicism; it was also brought by Spanish Conquistadors.
2. Some symbols used during the day of the dead are Calacas and calaveras which are shown by dolls, candy, and masks; they usally are portrayed in fancy clothing.
3. Since the day of the dead is not a time of mourning but a time of celebration they dance during the occasion and a dance that I learned was La Danza de los Viejitos (the dance of little old men) which originated from the Michoacan state. And fun fact kids would dress as old men when performing the Dance.

One of the reasons Catholicism became widespread among the native peoples was because of syncretism, where the Spanish changed the native peoples’ rituals slightly to correspond with Spanish and Catholic holidays and rituals.
