The initial plan was for the Old Wembley to be demolised before Christmas 2000 but numerous financial and legal difficulties meant that the demolition didn't start until September 2002. The FA were hoping for the new stadium to open in 2003 but numerous errors meant that the stadium didn't open until March 2007. This was despite Sports Minister Richard Caborn being confident of the stadium being opened in March 2006 but the FA decided the stadium wouldn't be worried for that year's FA Cup final, which was moved to the Millenium Stadium, Cardiff.
