Solving 5 + 9 using a number bond is simple! First, choose which number to make a 10. I will make the 9 a 10 by taking 1 from the 5. When I add the 1 + 9, I get 10. Since I took 1 from the 5, I only have 4 left. I need to add the 4 and 10 together. Now my number sentence says 4 + 10 instead of 5 + 9, but they both equal 14!
