This module covered a lot of information on autism in girls and how it can be misleading or presented differently in females rather than males. One of the big reasons autism can be misdiagnosed in females is because of masking. Masking is a term used to describe the ways females can “hide” or “cover up” some of their symptoms of autism that may lead outsiders to believe they don’t have autism as a diagnosis. Some of their tendencies can be easily masked. For one, repetitive behaviors may be highly noticeable in males to the extent that people would take note of that obsessive behavior. However, when it comes to females, obsessive behavior may seem more typical because what girls aren’t obsessed with their Barbie dolls when they are younger?!

The goal of therapy would be to support speech that is individualized to the client himself. The best option for this client would be to use play-based therapy techniques with the activity of using interactive play with cooking toys or barn animal toys. As the clinician I would also elicit wait time throughout the session to give the client opportunities to speak individually.
