I want to pose this question to my students again but I am going to incorporate all of the 6P's this time. I really like the idea of the "pitch" - I will consider how best to do this as I get to know my upcoming students. I need to give my students more guidance in the planning phase - well some more than others. I will develop forms they can use to assist them in their planning. I also want the students to rely on one another for feedback and not just myself.
Standards:
W.7.2 - Information
W.7.4 - Research
L.7.2 - Conventions
L.7.4 - Vocabulary
RI.7.2 - Central Idea

-Stephanie

I am looking forward to implementing genius hour. I am wondering if it would be a good idea to start with one block in the first semester and learn from the process and then do the other blocks the second semester.
I plan on spending time really getting the students to understand and identify what their passions are in the hope that they will be more invested in the project. I don't want them to just pick something for the sake of picking something. I will need to learn through the process how to be an effective facilitator of the planning phase to ensure their successes. I guess I don't know what I don't know. It will be a learning experience for all of us. I think to begin with, I will give them standards to chose from. This will depend on what they have chosen for their projects and what the individual needs are at the time. I can see the importance of being organized on my part.
Jocelyn

I'm wrestling with the incorporation of the standards and struggling to find a way to get a passion that will fit into jacked up ND 7th grade SS standards. Part of me thinks "just put more parameters on it"....which means it really isn't a passion. The other part of me thinks "seriously...do it any way and let them find the connection....and if they don't....who cares? The are learning and having fun."
My biggest concern is all the other crap we are doing in our district. Kids get burned out....bored...annoyed even at the possibility of having "another thing to do" without realizing the "thing" is somthing they are actually interested in doing.
Also, low flyers. They are always a concern.....

1. Pitch- I would like to have a Pitch Day in class this time through GH. Build the excitement and have a large group sharing experience. You never know what you will learn from your classmates!
2. I liked the fact that students chose their standards to meet in their product. Gave the kids an extra boost in scores where they needed it most; helped them evaluate there their weaknesses were and an opportunity to improve.
3. I think I will continue to wait for GH until after the first 9 weeks (at least) as there is a lot of technology teaching that needs to be done, practice of research skills, feedback protocol to be taught, etc. 6th graders have a lot of "social" learning to do the first part of school just getting used to being a middle schooler.

As I read Baron's reply I feel like I could have been writing it myself. That tends to happen when you teach the same class and share a locker room. Nonetheless, I am very interested in how a pitch day would work in my class. I really like the show shark tank so it reminds me of this. I sort of do this already with their state projects. They have to "market" their state based on tourism and try to sell their state to their classmates. Another part of this that I am a bit worried about is the time involved and the students getting overwhelmed by doing so many projects. I almost wonder if I could work with another teacher to help the students just have one PP for the two classes rather than two different PP's.
Derrick

I am very excited about the idea of Genius Hour. There's a part of me that wants to jump right into it at the beginning of the school year with informational writing - I think it would fit well with that standard and letting students pick a passion topic and research it. However, I completely agree with Jenni that there are definitely some social and computer skills that need to be learned and practiced before we can begin. I'm a little worried about waiting to do it at the end of the year because it always seems that I run out of time, and this would be a process I would want to make sure I give students enough time to complete it.
