An example would be, two stores that are right next to each other both with huge signs but one has the sign lit up and flashing. Would people notice and be attracted to a normal looking sign? No, they wouldn't, because it doesn't catch our eye. The tones also impact the story by letting the readers get an insight to how the main character is feeling. If the main character goes through an immense event, the readers are going to want to know how that certain character feels otherwise the scene doesn't send any impact.
