It helps to narrow students' focus and allows them to enjoy small successes that, when put together, can lead to achievement of the overall lesson objective. I love to take a long reading passage and give students only a few paragraphs to read at a time. Then I pose one comprehension question about that particular section. It is a lot easier for students to find textual evidence when looking at only a few paragraphs, than an entire reading passage.
