P&O made the executive decision in 1881 to open up their cruise ships to the public. Its first voyage was Liverpool as it was primarily used for mail and post beforehand. When luxury cruises became popular for lifestyle, there was an increase in migration of people going to america. This was transatlantic cruising and it led to an increase in passenger ships which still influences modern cruising. In the early 1800, cruising was only for the wealthy as it was a luxury. In the late 1800 this changed massively and there was more passenger ships.

Between the years of 1830- 1840, they introduced steamships into the industry and replaced sail ships as well as adding paddles with propellers to reduce the time sailing. This reduced travel time and as a result made the trips look more appealing for passengers as passenger ships. This is a cause of the increase in luxury trips as it was more enjoyable now it became quicker. The ships also changed to being built with iron which not only saved on space taken up as the timber pillars took up a lot of room but it also meant they could make the ships larger and carry more cargo and more passengers with the added space now. Iron also didn't need to be maintained as much as wood so it made maintenance costs low as well as low efforts maintaining it.

Cruising was exclusively only for those who had a high position in society and had wealth. Luxury cruise ships were for those with lots of money as it was the only way to cross the ocean in style. So cruising was only for the elite in society and the transatlantic movement which made it a limited market. In the later half of the 19th century major progression was made at making cruising more luxury and more boats were being made at rapid speed.

Due to there being a major incident of the 'Titanic' in 1912, there were major changes to maritime safety regulations for cruising. In 1914, the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea was created. This was due to the safety of all passengers at sea being prioritised as they never wanted an incident like the titanic to take place again. Part of why the titanic took place was because of the captain alongside with other officials not listening to the dangers and not taking the passengers safety into account. Cruising also became a fashionable experience for those that were wealthy passengers as entertainment and the quality of cruising improved. However in 1929, the country saw 'The great depression' which resulted in a decrease of popularity for cruising. In the 1940's when world war 2 took place the boats once used for cruising were used for transporting the navy and soldiers. An example would be the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth boats being used as a troopship.

From the years of 1900-1910, they developed luxury ocean liners which appealed to the luxury of cruising for the wealthy such as the Titanic and the Lusitania. They also switched to diesel powered ships from coal which lead to being able to travel for longer at lower costs and lower maintenance. This also massively boosted cruising for the luxury.

The cruise industry found that from the 1920's-1030's, more middle class people were travelling by cruises due to more people having disposable income on leisure activities such as cruises which led to a broader customer base and therefor a larger market then what it once was. They also saw a growth in family travel on cruises and there was also more children's entertainment on board.

In the 1960's they introduced Caribbean cruises which was an alternative to the transatlantic cruises which had only been about beforehand. This boosted cruising as they were now going to nice destinations. It was at this point that companies started to move more towards vacation cruises than ocean liners because of the 'Jet age'. As well as this in the 1970's they televised shows such as 'The love boat' which showed a romantic movie that glamorises cruising and boosted cruising into the lime light as it became a potential holiday idea for families around the world. There weren't as many TV shows at the time so the amount of views were far more than what shows on TV get today. Not only this but in the 1980's the amount of entertainment on board cruises massively improved which involved activities such as arcades, theatres ,casinos as well as introducing themed cruises to attract a certain demographic. For example cruises aimed at young families, rodeo themed, fancy black tie themed nights and more. This made cruising appear more lively. It was because of the increasing popularity in cruises that more companies were offering vacation cruises. This led to more competition and therefore companies were competing with lower prices, more appealing facilities and more. This raised the standards of cruising. As a result, more middle class passengers were going on cruises rather then just the elite.

Ships had always struggled with being rocky when in certain waters and when coming into contact with big waves. As a result, this made passengers experience 'Motion sickness' which affected how enjoyable the holiday was for most. This was until the 1960's when stabilisers for boats were being installed which resulted in balancing the boat on the current. For example if the boat swayed to the right, the liquid inside the stabilisers would go to the left to combat the motion. This resulted in the journey feeling more smooth and therefore more relaxing and glamorous. It made the journey less fearful so therefore more people took them. In 1980, the ship industry also had an improvement in its ship building so the standards and quality not only improved but the boats got bigger to fit more guests. This made it so cruise carriers could take more passengers on the cruise ships and be more equipped with new features.

In the 1990's there was a rise in themed cruises as well as family orientated cruises.Due to the global economic growth, more people had disposable income so were therefor going on holidays more often then before which led to an increase in people going on cruises. It wasn't just young families going on cruises either, this is because there was an ageing population boom for the elderly as they were now the target demographic for long luxury cruises due to them being retired. Because of the rise in mega ships, they were becoming more affordable too as well as the increase in Caribbean cruises. In 2008, the economy experienced a financial crisis which resulted in discounted cruises as the demand was now smaller than before.

There were a lot of advancements in the 90's that allowed for customers to connect with the outside world. This meant they received news etc. A lot of people held back from going on cruises as they didn't want to be isolated from the outside world. Another advancement that was made was satellite navigation. This not only made it easier for the captain and their team to operate but also made the journey safer as coast guards and more services could track the ships. This was useful when bad weather conditions were approaching or other ships. Because of the internet advancements it also made it easier for customers to book as it didn't just have to be done by travel agents which saved on money for customers.

In the early 2000s there was a growth of cruising in Asia which led to companies expanding their businesses to accommodate new customers and new trips. The financial problems of 2008 caused a decline in customers on cruises so companies had to offer packages for very cheap resulting in not as much profit for the industry. The older generation still remained the main target audience for cruises so more cruise lines were being catered to them. As well as other factors affecting business, the new concept of social media became vital for business as having an online presence on Instagram, Facebook, websites etc would generate more business and reach out to more customers than before. Influencers could now document their time on cruises and give brutally honest reviews which led to companies receiving backlash as well as sometimes a boost in sales. Also in the late 2010s, they introduced dynamic pricing for cruise tickets which meant that instead of set prices, the price would fluctuate based on demand for the cruises. In 2018, there was growing concerns for over tourism and overcrowding. This is because when cruises would dock up for the day and the passengers would go and explore the destination, small towns weren't equipped for the hundreds of people that were flowing into the town. An example would be Barcelona. Because of this hostility would grow from locals as it disrupted the culture and made it an unenjoyable place to be due to the heavy crowds.

One significant change in cruising was when smart card technology was introduced. Because of this not only did it shrink the amount of theft as spending on cards is more secure then carrying large amounts of cash to spend. Not only the security but also the amount of money being spent changed too. People didn't have to budget how much they were going to spend as much now as they can top up their bank cards, use cards that pay back on. As a result, cruise lines profited more then before. Because of the world being more cautious of the environmental impact ships were causing, stricter rules and regulations were put in place to limit the emissions released. Because of this, Liquified natural gas was made which met these rules. Another technological impact was the rise of online bookings which meant customers could do it themselves instead of relying on travel agencies and more bookings were being made as more information on cruises could be easily accessed via booking platforms.

In the 2010's, solo travelling became more popular which resulted in higher demand for expedition cruises. This led to new destinations for cruise line companies and new routes. Because of solo travelling becoming more popular, it also meant that cruise line companies were now designing rooms fit for one person. This meant they could carry more solo travellers with saved room, as well as make the ticket prices cheaper to attract more solo traveller customers and successfully compete with other cruise companies.

A big impact to cruise lines was the Covid-19 pandemic. This caused cruises to stop business completely for a period of time due to lockdown restrictions. This resulted in mass loss of money due to paying redundant workers, maintenance and even when the pandemic was over and restrictions were lifted, cruises still had to implement restrictions with testing, sanitising stations, vaccine mandates, and also enhance their protocols surrounding the health of everyone on cruises. Alongside with Covid costing the cruise companies lots of money, their was inflation and the fuel prices raised which resulted in the cruise companies rising the price of costs onboard as well as ticket prices. This resulted in less people going on cruises as people suffered after Covid financially as their work was affected which meant not as many people had disposable income.

AI technology has changed cruise line experiences massively. One example would be that AI can follow your algorithm on board the cruise to recommend activities to do during your stay using apps. An example would be that the Royal Caribbean cruises have an app to do this. They can also make chatbots on their apps to offer help and support to customers. This results in less physical staff to do this as the chatbots can answer any queries customers may have and also allows them to get answers quicker. Because of these features, AI is arguably enhancing the cruise experience for customers.

There is still a growing opinion of customers now wanting more eco-friendly cruises available so cruises are constantly looking for ways to reduce things such as food waste and rubbish disposal to further appeal not only to this customer type but also to any new regulations that are environmentally cautious.

In the early 19th century, cruises were only being used for the upper wealthy class so cruise ships were not a big market. This did grow in the later 19th century when they were being used for Transatlantic migration, this however was still not a holiday. In the early 20th century, the Titanic happened which meant the popularity in cruises decreased again because there were safety concerns amongst a lot of society. Because of this there were more maritime rules put in place so captains had to follow more rules in comparison to the early 19th century when they didn't. In the 1920's, cruising became more fashionable than before when it was being used primarily for transatlantic cruising. In the 1960's, shows like the 'Love boat' portrayed cruising as a holiday rather than just a mode of transport in comparison to the early 20th century when the Titanic incident made it unpopular. This showed that the market was expanding. In the 2000's the older generation had a boom in customer representation as cruises became more orientated to them. This was different to before hand as now it was attracting more middle class people who are now retired rather then before, it catering to upper middle class people who were in work but most likely in work that's low maintenance. In the 2010's, social media came into play which was a big contrast to former media such as TV. This meant more people could access real opinions and honest feedback as well as ordinary people seeing it not just those lucky enough to have Televisions. In the 2020's one massive social change that affected the economic state of cruises was COVID-19. This was contrast to any years before as this was the first serious outbreak in many years that would have been able to reach cruises.

One big difference in time was that in the 19th century they converted to steamships rather then sail ships to save on time and in the early 20th century they now developed it even more to make the steamships more luxurious such as the Titanic and the Lusitania. Another big contrast was that in the mid 20th century such as 1960 onwards, they installed stabilisers into ships making the customer experience nicer as they didn't develop sea sickness as much. In the late 20th century, they installed the internet into ships, making it again a nicer customer experience. The difference is in the accessibility that customers had to the outside world massively increased. This meant they could much more easily talk to family on shore, organise their port of call excursions. In the 2010's they introduced smart card technology on board making the expenses more for customers as they spent more money easily in comparison to AI being used in the 2020's to enhance customer experience as this doesn't result in more sales for the companies

Changes in customer type

A big difference is that in the 19th century, cruises were less accessible which meant they were for the wealthy class. This changes in the early 1920's as now more middle class people were going on cruises due to the growing popularity as well as more steamships and companies being made. In the 1970's the show the 'Love boat' portrayed cruises as romantic and wholesome, this contrasts to the 90's as cruises developed a more partying reputation as cruises were becoming themed so they were catered towards different target audience. in the 2010's, they had a growth in solo travellers, in comparison to the 2020's when they had a growth in Eco-tourism which supports different ideas for cruises and new changes to cruises had to be made for both changes in customer type. For example solo travellers meant more single use cabins whereas Eco-friendly travellers meant more recycling, less emissions and less food waste.

Tour operations integration

In the 60's cruises became more accessible as travel agencies partnered with cruise companies as well as cruises being sold in package holidays. In the 90's, cruise companies merged with airlines and tour operators. This resulted in changes of where people got cruises from. In comparison to before, people in areas where cruises didn't dock from would be less likely to get a cruise whereas now, they can buy a package holiday including flights and cruises which makes booking them easier than before and they can travel different places for less time. For example people can fly to the Caribbean to get a cruise along there as opposed to getting one from the UK which usually only travels to parts of Europe and would take much longer to get to the Caribbean than flying. In 2020, virgin made the Scarlet lady but it wasn't used due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In comparison to 2 years later in 2022, the Virgin holidays company has since made another 2 boats that are in use.
