A trending article titled, "Peer mentoring helps fill mental help support" written by Amelia Harper (2019), discussed the importance of peer mentoring to help students who are in need of support when adjusting to the school environment. The peer mentoring program was started due to a lack of school counselors. Students who were experiencing stress due to financial concerns, homework assignments, and mental health issues benefited from the peer mentor program and allowed school counselors and administrators more time to address serious crisis situations.

https://www.educationdive.com/news/peer-mentoring-helps-fill-mental-health-support-gap/550999/

After exploring about peer mentoring programs in schools I am interesting in learning how to organize and manage the program effectively and successfully between different grade levels beginning with primary grades and higher.
This is interesting to me because I often witness and hear about students who are struggling academically, socially, emotionally, and mentally. Often times, due to financial cuts, schools lack of support staff, such as school counselors and other administrators. The lack of support staff often leads to a higher percentage classroom disruptions, lower student success, office referrals, or school suspensions.

This article written by Edward D. Campolongo (2009), investigated the impact of peer mentoring programs within varies Christian School settings. School counselors are responsibility for providing students with support services to ensure student success in all areas of academics and social/emotional development. The main question from this research was, "What intentional steps are Christian school leaders doing to establish peer mentoring groups in their schools" (Campolongo, 2009 p. 70).

Step 5- What I learned about School Counselors and Peer Support Mentoring Programs

I learned that peer mentoring support programs provide support for students facing stressors due to homework, financial concerns, mental health issues, and issues with peers (Harper, 2019). Without proper guidance and support services, these students may begin to struggle with substance abuse, drop out of school, experience suicidal thoughts, or experience mental health crisis (Harper, 2019). According to Harper (2019), students who are considered to be great leaders for peer support groups have good judgement, have empathy and compassion for others. Students are more willingly to share their problems with their peers rather than with their parents, teachers, and other administrators (Harper, 2019).

As a future school counselor, it is important to have parental involvement and consent prior to starting peer mentoring to students (Harper, 2019). School counselors and Administrators must work to ensure that students understand their boundaries and obligations as mentors and mentees (Harper, 2019). According to the American School Counselor Association (ASCA, 2015), school counselors ethical responsibilities included evaluating the school needs and implementing peer support programs. These programs improve the school counseling program by providing student awareness of support services and increasing outreach between peers (ASCA, 2015).
