Hey my name is Rolando Toledo and I was born in Miami, Florida but everyone in my family before me was born and raised in Cuba. As I stated, I was born in Miami and was raised there for 11 years before moving to Costa Rica to live with my grandma for three years because my mom and stepdad went to Puerto Rico to enhance their career in the medical field as they were nurses before the trip and after the trip they would become Nurse Anaesthetists. I did 7th to the end of 9th grade in Costa Rica and made many friends and made really great memories in my 3 years over in Costa Rica. Eventually, after my parents returned from Puerto Rico with their new career they decided to move to Cape Coral because Miami was too full and they wanted something more peaceful. I lived three years in Cape Coral and made even more friends there than I made in Costa Rica and graduated from a private school in Fort Myers but as I was nearing my graduation day my mom told me that we were moving back to Miami because she missed her people. I was super angry and did not want to move but i was 18 and had to follow my parents wherever they go so to Miami we went. I applied to Miami Dade College in the Eduardo Padron Campus and started my journey in Criminal Justice. A year and a half later I am as happy as can be in Miami. There is nothing that compares to Miami. I love being around hispanics as they are my people too. The energy and feelings in Miami is extraordinary and no place has the same effect. I absolutely love it here and do not ever want to move to anywhere else.

Climate Gentrification

Climate gentrification is a huge problem in Miami. It is sad that some have to move to an area with lower elevation which means that it is more at risk to sea level rise. Since everyone wants to be closer to the water because of it's beauty and the desire to have easy accesibility to it, Biscayne Bay and Downtown Miami are the areas that have been worked on the most in the last 40 years or so. One of the problems inolving climate gentrification is that people are being moved out of their neighborhoods and because of this they may have no choice but to move somewhere that could possibly be more susceptible to sea level rise. Stating climate gentrification as one problem and deciding to tackle just that one labeled problem is not as efficient as tying it to all the other problems such as climate change that plagues Miami is what City of Miami Director of Planning Francisco Garcia claims and I believe He is right. A solution to these issues needs to come by soon because for a lot or people living in Miami, they are living a life in which they need to worry constantly about something that is completely out of their control and that is not right!

It is true that to solve a problem we must first understand what we are dealing with so we can come up with the right solution that will fix or better help the situation. In the video a question is asked. The question is whether the solution to reducing plastic will benefit both people and the planet? The answer to this question is yes absolutely because plastic in oceans is harmful to ocean wildlife and it dirties the ocean itself. Plastic on land is not good unless it is in it's proper place such as a recycling bin or the trash. Reducing plastic will benefit more than just the planet and humans, it will also benefit the animals and will help make Earth a cleaner and safer place to live on. Can we come up with a proper solution to this problem? New technology, will it reach everyone? Can it be shared to everyone? The solution must be something that is scalable and accesible so that more people can participate because it is cheaper and therefore be able to help the planet and it's inhabitants more easily!

The video that I chose to watch and talk about is "why the US isn't ready for clean energy." What caught my attention is the interesting fact that the U.S. needs more renewable energy as what we have generting it is not enough. High voltage powerlines have bare electrical wires so they need to be kept far enough away from each wire but also from everything else such as trees and other objects as it can start wildfires and other dangerous situations. The structure that has already been built is pretty well engineered as is and there are many of these structures, just goes to show how well they work but there needs to be more of them built so there can be more sustainable energy for every building!

Can we remove all the hazardous materials that do not belong in the water? Can we find and create solid fail safe solutions that will make the oceans a safer, and cleaner place in which we can enter. Specifically I will explore what ways are the best to clean up the oceans, whether it be ideas or actual investigation of technology that can be used to clean places thoroughly. The oceans are filling up with dirty unsafe materials and is causing destruction to both humans and seawildlife. "Fish become tangled and injured in the debris, and some animals mistake items like plastic bags for food and eat them." "More than 80% of ocean pollution comes from land-based sources, making its way to the seas through runoff, rivers, atmospheric deposition, and direct discharges. It is most highly concentrated along the coasts of low- and middle-income countries."

Marine pollution. National Geographic Society. (n.d.).

Wind Energy in Florida

"Florida has experimented with wind energy on a very small scale—as in creating turbines to power electric cars—but the state hasn’t yet embraced the full capabilities of this energy source. This is mostly because winds in the state don’t generate enough consistent force, so the only workaround is to use turbines that tower more than 600 feet above the landscape—the types that have faced opposition in other states." As it says here in this quote from an article I found online, we can see that Florida cannot exercise their full capacity in developing many wind energy products and developments because there isn't enough consistent force in the winds that we obtain but if we did have enough consistent force many more developments would be made with the wind energy. With all the engineers and scientists here in Florida the possibilities for the machines and creations that would be made are endless!

Source:

Stacker.

Something that caught my attention was the saying that humanity each year creates 400 million more tons of plastic, and when it is discarded 30 percent goes into the water which is part of the problem as the amount of trash thrown into the ocean will only increase every year. It was said that 10 million tons of plastic waste ends up in the ocean every year. Some microbes can help with the problem as some organisms are capable of breaking down plastic, but even with this help they are not able to chew up more plastic than the one that is being dumped in so even though it is a boost, it still does not really help the problem. We need to find better ways to help with this plastic pollution problem.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-m0YaE8uKcg

Electromagnetic energy travels in waves and spans a broad spectrum from very long radio waves to very short gamma rays. The human eye can only detect a small portion of this spectrum called visible light. A radio detects a different portion of the spectrum, and an x-ray machine uses yet another portion. One fun fact is that far infrared waves are radiant heat. The electromagnetic spectrum is something cool and very interesting to learn about as there are many categories that belong to the spectrum and is important to know about.

I chose goal 14 oceans and seas because I love the water and am very interested in helping clean up the oceans and seas from all the pollution that is being drawn more and more into the water. This can affect climate change because it is another problem that can cause many changes to the water and it's sea animal wildlife. Pollution not only inhabits oceans but land as well. It can always result in a negative effect towards more climate change problems.

Fabian D's Padlet Review

I chose Fabian D's padlet because the background looks super nice and everything he has written about looks very interesting. My peers writing on climate gentrification is a very well thoughout piece that he wrote. His reports on the humanity discussion is very well put together and we both noticed the same things, like the strong images and all the endless threats that exist today that can harm humanity as we know it. Fabian's writing on why the US is not ready for clean energy is the same topic that I chose and we both have the same opinion on it. There was a lot of information brought to us in that video and just like it Fabian said it caught his attention, it also caught mine heavily as well. I loved his writing on why fossil fuels are used and why they are so important and have been for a long time. Fabian goes into depth when talking about them and it is really nice to see how deep and thorough his research goes.

https://padlet.com/fabiadelcastillo001/my-portfolio-bqlp526vgq5ljbb5

Desalination Explanation

Desalination can be a huge solution to the problem of dry areas that do not have water or that do not have clean water because with desalination the process is a very stable one in which you will always have water when you need it with the desalination process.

Climate change is downplaying everything, making everything worse. Along with climate change, many areas still do not have clean water. If there is a desalination plant you are guranteed safe and clean water as long as there is sea water to desalinate but the process to desalinate takes a lot of energy, time, and money because there would be a need to advocate for this solution and not many have the proper abilties for that. Desalination alone cannot fix the whole situation, there needs to be an involvement of other resources. Desalination can and will help but alone it will never fix the whole problem, it must be implemented along other solutions. With so many situations in the world, this problem where there are many dry areas without water just adds to the already full list of worldy situations. The process by which clean water will be obtained will manufacture itself further as time moves on so we will see what is to come with the situations and solutions.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfr82RB72U8&t=1s

Why Europe Never Receives Any Hurricanes

Why has Europe not had a hurricane hit their shores? Turns out Europe has something others don't that helps extremely when dealing with hurricanes. Europe's location is the answer. Calculated from the year 2000 to now it has been discovered that Europe has received remains of about 30 hurricanes, only pieces of the huge storm, where as Florida has received 79 real hurricanes over the same time frame. So for the hurricane to reach Europe it would have to tread North for a long time, over about 200 miles but once the storm reaches 30 degrees north it will encounter a subtropical jet stream which moves in the completely opposite of direction the trade winds so it will blow the storm east but by then the hurricane has colder waters so it will have less power because a hurricane becomes stronger and stronger based on the more warm moist air it picks up so if there is colder water it will be picking up colder air which will cause the hurricane to lose it's power more and more as it keeps moving on the cold waters and as it is on it's way to Europe by the time it gets there Europe will only be receiving heavy rains, maybe flooding, and minor casualties.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1JeRQnpkM0

My Thoughts On This Course: Before, During, and After.

I have taken many science classes, dating all the way back to elementary school. I still remember the basic things that I was taught back then. It was super interesting things and I was mind blown at how and what I was taught in school. Science was the favorite subject of most of my friends and I enjoyed it every time I had the class. There was plenty of diversity in the subjects as of course there are many subjects when talking about science, I would say the list is never ending.

Science shows many things.
Everything that we have today in this world started out as something and with time expanded into something greater. That is how life is. Life evolves, it never stays the same. Everyone and everything ages over time. Change is good and bad, but it is never still. Everything is destined to change and there is beauty in change. Things may be one way while others can be the same or different.

Before I took this PSC course, I had a general idea about science. I enjoyed sciene for the most part, I definitely like it more than math and English because it is very interesting to me to learn how everything came to be so I also love history. I had taken a class like this last semester with the same teacher and enjoyed the class and the teacher. My expectations for this class were very high in terms of me liking, learning more, and thoroughly enjoying my time in the class and the class isn't even over and I already do not want it to end. I came into the class not knowing what to expect and am going to finish with more knowledge than ever, knowledge that will never leave me thanks to the way it was taught and how amazing it is.

During the course I felt good. I looked forward to the class and enjoyed doing the work. When I saw this assignment I literally said to myself "This is going to be fun." mostly because I love writing and expressing myself especially if it is from a class I enjoy. During all our activities I learned so much about what is going on in our world and was able to write about these problems. My experience was different from what I expected only because I came with the expectation that this class would be the same as the last class I took with the same teacher. As I saw, this class is fromatted differently but I actually liked the way this class was and actually liked it more than how the last class was so in this case I am glad that this class wasn't how I expected it to be.

In conclusion, after I would complete the assignments, I would leave with all the information in my head and until now I have not forgotten and that is because it was taught well. Now that the class is coming to an end, I can give a full thorough analysis on how I feel about the class. I feel good, I feel like this was one of the best classes I have and will ever take. The teacher, the way the course is designed, the activities can never be replicated by anyone. This class is one of a kind and anyone who takes any class like this will be lucky to have the chance to do so. Like I said, this class is ending soon and I really hate that. When you love a class time flies quick, but when you hate a class, time moves so slow. I wish it were the other way around so I could enjoy the classes I like more and learn more but everything always comes to an end, that is life. I will never forget this class, and will always remember everything that was taught to me and how well it was taught to me.
