Analyzing characters

Tips for characterizing a character:
- 1.) if you describe a characters personality provide evidence for the personality trait by refering to a scene where the trait is prominently shown
- 2.) Think about the inspiration of your character, what influences their behaviour?
-3.) Take a look at their actions! Do they match up with their personality? How do they influence others? What are the intentions behind them?
- 4.) Analyze the character's choice of words! What kind of language/words do they use?
-5.) Describe the view of the character on his own identity. How does the character identify itself?

Try to discuss their personality, their role and their development within the story.

Also always consider if the character is well rounded and complex or flat and one dimensional!

The character of Kathy

Kathy poses as the main protagonist throughout the plot of the movie. We experience the whole story through her eyes. And learn about her childhood, teen years and her adulthood throughout the movie. She grew up in Hailsham together with Tommy and Ruth, which become her best friends during their time at Hailsham. She is portrayed as a generally helpful and and kindhearted, caring person, which is why she becomes a great carer after she graduated from Hailsham. She is also shown to be very creative which is furtherfied by the fact her art projects get picked for tbe gallery a lot. She is shown to question the rules at Hailsham a lot but is never shown to break any of them. During their time in Hailshaim Kathy is shown to have romantical feelings for Tommy, who eventually starts a relationship with Ruth instead, which seems to bother her, even though she tries to accept it. Eventually, after 10 years she works as a carer and meets Ruth, who's close to completing, after her 2nd donation. Ruth and Kathy meet up with Tommy, whom is doing alright after his 3rd donation. Eventually Kathy and Tommy end up together and after they apply for a deferral and being told there never were deferrals, Kathy becomes Tommys carer and watches him completing. Towards the ending of the movie she realises there has never been hope and that everyone will die one day, but she is shown to be happy about fullfilling her purpose.

The character of Tommy

From the beginning Tommy is shown as a quite emotional person, that is shown to act on how he feels instead of acting rational, like Ruth is during the curse of the movie. He is shown to be very caring and loving towards his friends, but especially towards Kathy, whom he's having romantical feelings for. Tommy eventually starts a relationship with Ruth, even though he confesses his feelings to Kathy He is portrayed as the outsider during his time in Hailsham, with barely anyone talking to him at Hailsham. He is also shown to have very intensive outbursts of anger, where he screams a lot. After him and Kathy apply for a defferal after Ruth gives them the adress of the Lady who was responsible for the gallery, they meet Miss Emily, the headteacher of Hailsham, who tells them there never where deferrals and that their sole purpose is to be donors. After that Tommy is devestated, he is shown to have another one of his angry outbursts. Towards the end of the story Tommy makes his last donation and completes, while Kathy, who became his carer, is watching.

The character of Ruth

Ruth is a friend of Tommy and Kathy and went to Hailsham together with them. She is shown to be very manipulative and rational, as she abides to the rules of Hailsham, but is trying to split Kathy and Tommy apart because she is afraid of ending up alone. She ends up with Tommy after they graduate and is very manipulative, mendling with the affairs of Tommy and Kathy to keep them apart. She is also shown to be very devestated, after she finds out they were created to donate their organs even to addicts and prostitutes. After 10 years of being apart Ruth had already had 2 donations and meets Kathy, who volunteers to be her donor, she is shown to not have any will to live anymore and says that she wants to complete after her 3rd donation, as she's afraid of what would happen to her if she survived the 4th donation. After Ruth and Kathy meet up with Tommy Ruth is shown to make efforts towards making amends towards Tommy and Kathy, because she manipulated their relationship in order to not be alone (which was an act of selfishness back in the days). She gives both of them the adress for the Lady who was responsible for the galery. After she gave them the adress she is shown completing after her 3rd donation, meaning she's made peace with her past decisions.

All in all every character is pretty well rounded, their actions match up with their personality and characters, such as Ruth is shown to have a character development, by trying to make amends for her manipulation in her teenage years.
