What is the difference between gender equity, gender equality and women’s empowerment?

Gender equity is the process of being fair to women and men. To ensure fairness, strategies and measures must often be available to compensate for women’s historical and social disadvantages that prevent women and men from otherwise operating on a level playing field. Equity leads to equality. Gender equality requires equal enjoyment by women and men of socially-valued goods, opportunities, resources and rewards. Where gender inequality exists, it is generally women who are excluded or disadvantaged in relation to decision-making and access to economic and social resources. Therefore a critical aspect of promoting gender equality is the empowerment of women, with a focus on identifying and redressing power imbalances and giving women more autonomy to manage their own lives.

Why is gender equality important?

Gender equality is intrinsically linked to sustainable development and is vital to the realization of human rights for all. The overall objective of gender equality is a society in which women and men enjoy the same opportunities, rights and obligations in all spheres of life. Equality between men and women exists when both sexes are able to share equally in the distribution of power and influence; have equal opportunities for financial independence through work or through setting up businesses; enjoy equal access to education and the opportunity to develop personal ambitions, interests and talents; share responsibility for the home and children and are completely free from coercion, intimidation and gender-based violence both at work and at home.
However it is important to acknowledge that where gender inequality exists, it is generally women who are excluded or disadvantaged in relation to decision-making and access to economic and social resources. Therefore a critical aspect of promoting gender equality is the empowerment of women, with a focus on identifying and redressing power imbalances and giving women more autonomy to manage their own lives.

The employment rate for women reached an all-time high level of 65.5% in the third quarter of 2016, compared to 55% in 1997. Although this represents good progress, the labor market participation of women in the EU is still significantly lower than that of men, which currently stands at 77.4%. Moreover the gender gap in employment has been blocked at around 12 percentage points since 2013.
The nature of the jobs that women are undertaking is just as important for addressing inequality as the overall level of employment. 32% of women work part time compared to only 9% of men. This can lead to diminished career opportunities, lower prospective pensions, underutilization of human capital and thus lower economic growth and prosperity. Member States with an above EU average of female part-time employment are the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Luxembourg, Denmark and Ireland.

Since the second half of the 20th century, women’s labor force participation has grown significantly. Women are working longer hours and pursuing higher education in greater numbers.
Why International Women’s Day is one moment in a growing digital march?

Around the globe, March 8 is celebrated as International Women’s Day — a collective effort to advance gender equality and celebrate women’s achievements and impact on cultural, political, and social issues. Despite having been around for more than 100 years, International Women’s Day reached peak search interest in March 2017 — the same month that global search interest in gender equality reached its highest point.
When looking back at the events of 2017, it’s clear why the world is searching for gender equality more than ever before. Last year began with a worldwide Women’s March spanning all seven continents and aiming to bring attention to inequality surrounding issues like women’s rights, immigration, and workplace equality. And as the year wound down, conversations around sexual harassment in Hollywood, government, and the workplace brought the #MeToo movement to the mainstream—and to countries around the world with local translations of the hashtag.

Is gender inequality just a woman's issue?

Gender (in)equality concerns both women and men and has a strong impact on their daily lives. Historically gender equality policies have been contextualized mainly as a “women’s issue” – as women have been a driving force behind gender equality strategies and struggles.

This view has contributed to the perception that women are the only ones who will benefit from a more equal society. In reality, also men benefit from gender equality as they too face gender-specific issues such as lower life expectancy, bad health, lower education levels and rigid gender norms. It is essential that both women and men are aware of the benefits that gender equality brings to them as individuals and as members of communities and societies. It is also true that we can only succeed through the participation of both women and men.

Therefore it is important to engage more men in standing for gender equality for this is the way to bring about change. To do that it is also necessary to make men understand how gender equality is relevant for them.

Considering that within the gender equality discourse men are under-represented (they are less likely to participate in events and projects related to gender equality) EIGE recognizes men as a specific target group for its work to raise their awareness of their role as partners in achieving a more gender equal society.
