I appreciated Torres' TED talk, especially what he said about how it was difficult, and even painful, for him to write his novel, because it shows me how important he feels that he tells his story. Torres did not write We The Animals for recognition or enjoyment, but because he feels that he has a duty to ameliorate a societal problem that he is familiar with.

I feel moderately comfortable talking about this unit, and I think that it is definitely something that needs to be talked about more often. Most of the discomfort that I feel is due to the fact that we've never truly had an in-depth lesson on queer theory and sexuality, so it's a new subject for me.
