It was an era of accumulation for the few and loss for the many.

Mercantilism led to the overuse of natural resources in colonies. Forests were cut down, land was over-farmed, and minerals were heavily mined to send materials to Europe. This caused deforestation, soil damage, and pollution, harming local ecosystems and wildlife.

Mercantilism caused deep social inequality in the colonies. Native populations and enslaved people were often forced to work in harsh conditions with little to no rights, while the wealth they produced benefited only the colonizers and elite classes. This led to exploitation, loss of cultural identity, and long-term social division.
