And then he broke off the end of his bottle and held it up to the Socs and he threatened them by saying, "You get back into your car or you'll get split." That scared them so they got back into their cars and drove off. This is important because whenever Ponyboy would encounter Socs before he would be terrified and the first time he was handed a broken bottle he barely had the intention to use it.
