The water is allowed to stream down an incline (called a pen stock) behind the dam when a gate is opened, and the water's speed accelerates as it goes down the incline. This makes it spin a turbine, which generates electricity in a generator. Then the power flows through a transformer and the new electricity then runs along power lines to homes and buildings.
