When Portia and her maid Nerissa were discussing the qualities and personalities of the different people who wanted to marry Portia. "I shall only be married in the way my father wanted." This shows that Portia was a very honest person and respected and listened to her father. This is because Portia still fulfilled his wish before he died which was the person Portia married must choose the correct chest which was a test made by Portia's father. Even though Portia's father is dead now, she is still obeying his wish and letting his test choose something very important in her life which was her husband. The diction "only" shows that Portia was very insistent on the way she chose her husband and would only choose him the way her father wanted and not any other way. .Thus, I get the impression that Portia was a very honest person who respected and listened to her father

When Nerissa and Portia are talking about life, "Oh, Nerissa, my little body is tired of this big world" This show that Portia is longing for freedom. She is being pressured by her father to choose her husband. She does not wish to be bothered by all the things the world wants to expect in her. The author uses the metaphor "little" and "big" this emphasizes the difference in the way Portia views her surrounding, she feels she is so small smaller than the world so her choice of freedom is not to be. She desires to be free from this big world and be bigger then she is then to be able to make her own choice.

Portia also says "Oh, it is easy to know what the right thing to do is. But if it were as easy to do the right thing, poor men would live in princes' palaces. I could easily teach twenty people the right thing to do. But I could never be one of the twenty people who followed what I was teaching" This shows that Portia longed to be the one following she does not wish to be carrying the burden of life. Although she knows what is expected of her she does not want to follow her responsibility.

She wishes to follow her own path of freedom and does not want to bear any responsibility or duty. She wants to break society norm. The author uses hyperbole Portia exaggerates to show the difficulty of following one's own advice, emphasizing the struggle between knowledge and action.

Furthermore she says, "Oh that word 'choose'! I cannot choose the man I like or say no to the man I do not like" and "I cannot choose or say no to anyone?" This completely enforce the meaning of the freedom she longs for. She has been restricted by her father and even choosing her very own lifelong husband is not in her will everything go against her freedom and she is being constricted to a strict future.

After all the author uses irony to show how wealthy Portia is and the fact she is supposed to be happy however she feels trapped and wants to be free even though she was supposed to have the power to make her own choice even her husband. However she is trapped and is unable to make her own choice despite her wealth and knowledge. :)

All in all Portia is wealthy and rich however she doesnot have the freedom of her own choices and future
