My name is Seymour Rechtzeit and I was born in Lodz, Poland, in 1912.. 

My family decided that I should come to America, where there would be more opportunities for me. . I had an uncle in America, and he sent two tickets 

for my father and me. The rest of my family stayed in Poland. The plan was that my father and I would make 

enough money to bring them to America, too.

In Danzig, now known as “Gdansk”, we boarded a ship called The Lapland.

 It was 1920, and I was on my 

way to America.

Riding on a big boat across the Atlantic Ocean may sound like fun, but it wasn’t. The two-week trip was 

miserable! Our room was in steerage, way down in the bottom of the boat. It was lined with bunks, one 

on top of the other. It was uncomfortable and crowded. I went up deck all the time, just to have room to 

move around.

We hit many bad storms at sea. It rained hard, and I was wet and shivering. By the time we sailed into New 

York Harbor past the Statue of Liberty

My dad was a fisherman and we got by until he died at sea last year. Then I had to leave school and earn a living as a farmhand. But life's too tough here in Ireland now and I've decided to try my luck in America. As soon as I've saved enough money, I'll board a ship for New York.

May 2, 1892 – I'm leaving tomorrow. I dread having to kiss Ma good bye. We'll both be heartbroken. But I know it's my only chance.

On Ellis Island, the first test was the « six-second medical exam », as they call it. We climbed the stairs to the Great Hall and doctors stood at the top and watched. I knew they were looking for signs of weakness, so I climbed as briskly as I could. Fortunately I got no chalk mark and I went on to the Great Hall for interviews with legal inspectors. It only took Patrick and me six hours to be cleared. But I know some families will have to stay for months and might even be sent back home. How appaling …

I had to answer a series of questions : if I could read and write, my final destination in the United States, how much money I had (not much), if I was joining relatives and whatnot. I lied a little and told them Patrick's uncle would sponsor me. They said I could stay in America !

Then Patrick and I took the ferry to Manhattan. We were so happy ! Patrick says he'll go to California, but he won't take me with him. He says it's too dangerous for a girl.
