Yersinia pestis is a rod-shaped bacteria that is nonmotile and does not contain any spores. It is an anaerobic organism that can infect humans by the Oriental rat flea. Three different forms have caused disease plagues over the years and have been held responsible for a number of epidemics. Between 1347 and 1353, over one-third of the population of Europe died from the "Black Death." The Modern Plague took place in China and spread by rats which claimed nearly 10 million lives.
