In Chicago we aim to expand competency-based learning by building a continuum of personalized K-12 education experiences. Our plan will build on an exciting pilot already under way in a handful of Chicago Public high schools that seeks to reward students for their mastery of core academic and social/emotional competencies, both inside and outside of traditional classroom walls, rather than simply by how many credit hours they accumulate.

The Together for Students lead partners in Chicago – consisting of Thrive (local affiliate of Strive); CIS and Chicago Public Schools – will engage community-based organizations, as well as parents, students and school leaders in a collective process to (a) enhance the social emotional competencies assessed in pilot high schools, (b) develop a complementary set of social/emotional learning competencies for students in grades K-8 aligned with those used in high school, and (c) ensure alignment of CBO partners working with those schools.

Working closely with CPS, Thrive and CIS of Chicago will develop a plan to pilot the teaching of these competencies in the feeder schools of one or more of the CBL high schools.

Our vision is for this K-12 competency continuum to be a model for how we teach children in the 21st Century global economy.

This blueprint will become our road map for aligning, mobilizing, and implementing academic and non-academic strategies to improve leading indicators for on-time graduation including children entering kindergarten demonstrating expected developmental skills and all children enrolled in pk-3rd grade attending 90% or more days of instruction. Community schools strategies--with an intentional focus on the P-3 parent-child development continuum--will be designed around five elementary school neighborhoods.

DCPS and our partners at Communities in Schools of the Nation’s Capital, will convene city and community leaders to co-create a DCPS Community School model. We believe that a shared DCPS Community School Model will help grow and sustain the strong foundation DC has built for community schools and will also enable schools and partners to more fully integrate community schools strategies within our school communities. There are three key objectives to achieve within the planning period:

I. Co-create a shared DCPS Community School Framework

Common vision and clear expectations of how school leaders, Community School Managers (CSM), DCPS central office, and Lead Agencies work together

Defined outcomes and metrics of success for all DCPS Community School sites, focusing on attendance, health/mental health supports, and student/family engagement

A scope of technical assistance & support to drive continuous improvement

II. Launch the DCPS Community School Framework in SY18-19

3 current Communities in Schools (CIS) sites in August 2018

School planning will include PD from Turnaround for Children, a new approach/protocol for community-driven data reviews, and integration of Community School strategies into the existing Comprehensive School plans

III. Increase city-wide collaboration

Convene city-wide planning committee to advise on the DCPS Framework and to begin creating a collective long-term vision and sustainability plan
