How can physical arousal (like being hard) be misunderstood in the context of consent, and why is it important to listen to what someone says rather than assume based on their body’s response?

Physical arousal is an uncontrollable reaction of the human body and it is important to not make assumptions based off of it for this reason. Someone that's physically aroused can often be misunderstood and be their need to provide consent can often be disregarded in some scenarios. This is due to the misconception that physical arousal aligns with consent, which it doesn't. Listening to what someone has to say is crucial as it avoids the risk of any miscommunications/misunderstandings and ensures that everybody's needs are heard. If someone is physically aroused it is not safe to assume that they give consent, instead it is important to make sure to ask and that they provide an enthusiastic yes. If they don't respond with an enthusiastic yes you must assume it is a no.

Even if two people have previously enjoyed physical closeness, why is it still essential to communicate and respect boundaries each time intimacy progresses?

Just because two people have previously enjoyed physical closeness does not mean it's not safe to assume that they will want to in the future. One reason for this is that people can change their minds at any moment and for any reason. This can occur even due to the smallest factors, but it's important to respect their decision. The specific reason for this change of mind isn't very important, but what really matters is that both individuals communicate their boundaries on a regular basis.

At the end of the day humans are emotional beings, and feelings can change at any moment. Because of this it's crucial to communicate consent each time to ensure that everyone's boundaries are respected and understood.

What is the impact of fixed/strict ideas about masculinity?

Fixed or strict ideas of masculinity can have many large impacts on men and society as a whole. Some of these impacts include: Self-esteem/identity issues, aggression/violence, communication issues, mental health issues and suppression of emotions. These are just some of the effects that fixed/strict ideas about masculinity can have on men universally. This is a serious issue, challenging these ideas and promoting things like more open communication and vulnerable spaces for men are some steps to challenging these fixed ideas. Creating a more welcoming environment for men's emotions would result in a decrease in the vast majority of the issues caused by these fixed ideas of masculinity.

How can you ensure that everyone in the Glenunga Community can feel safe to be who they are without facing judgement?

We can ensure that everybody feels safe and unjudged within the Glenunga community by taking measures to promote welcoming a welcoming environment where everybody and their unique personalities belong. Some ways this could be achieved are by promoting individualism/being yourself, diversity, emotional openness and by providing support services (student wellbeing).

Although Glenunga is currently taking some of these measures, by implementing more of them we can ensure that Glenunga becomes a more accepting environment for people to be themselves without and judgment.

What are some positive outcomes of challenging discrimination and transphobia for the transgender, gender diverse, and non-binary community?

Challenging discrimination and transphobia will result positively for the transgender, gender diverse, and non-binary communities. This would lower the risk of violence and harassment towards these communities, which sadly they face a lot of. This would make these communities feel safer and more included and accepted into modern society. People tend to feel a sense of belonging when they see and hear more of things that resonate with themselves, therefore an increase in this type of promotion would result in increased inclusivity. Building a supportive environment for people that are a part of these communities makes the world an overall better place. Support of any kind increases confidence and feelings of self-worth positively. These changes help society and culture move forward by encouraging diversity and inclusion for everyone.
