Last year I started to emphasize collaboration in my classroom. I sprinkled in activities throughout the semester that pushed my students to collaborate. We had discussions at the beginning of the semester about what collaboration is and how I will be judging whether effective collaboration is happening. My idea is that mind maps would help students think through the aspects of collaboration a little better than just generating a list as they can start with a few key ideas and then build off of those to get into the specifics. Not only would this be more of a thought provoking activity, but we could compare what they came up with to my mind map and add to/edit it to create a definition we all agree on…thus demonstrating collaboration.

I thought this would be a good way to initially review the prefix re-. I could write the prefix and the meaning in the center then write one or two sticky notes as examples. Then they could write some. We’d write the word beginning with re-, then the definition of the word, then either a sentence or draw a picture. I found it difficult to do the pen/writing and am wondering how this would work. If they use a sticky note, they can’t draw a picture. Then I wrote a couple words and would want them to fill in the definition and sentence/picture - are they able to do that if we are connected to the wifi and both have an ipad? Kaitlin mentioned using Kami on the Chromebooks (thanks, Kaitlin!) - since our district doesn’t have ipads, perhaps that is how they would need to do it. I could also see this being a good group review…I could display it on the smart board and they could tell me what to type. I found it fun and keep thinking of more things to do with it…I just don’t know how to do a few things.

I only have one iPad and so I could see myself using this when I work with students individually. Right now, I see one student individually so we could do this. I would start the Popplet by typing the question in the center. The student would then fill out the bubbles around it with green items from the book. We could take a screenshot and send to her family on ClassDojo to show her learning as well. Marianne

Each day we go over the sound(s) and read a list of examples as a group. Words that feature our letters and digraphs/trigraphs are embedded into our poems, stories, and songs for the unit. Each letter and digraph/trigraph is also featured in a video with Mr. Lineman and many examples of various words with those spellings are shown. I think Popplet would be a great way to assess student understanding of these different phonograms. Here I made an example of an assessment where students would need to brainstorm four words that have tch in them.

I created a simple mind map that students would use during our Geometry Unit. Geometry tends to be vocab heavy and the more I can expose students to the vocab and get them talking about the words, the easier time they have with memorizing the meanings. In this case, I would teach about the 4 different types of angles and use this as a review. Students would be given time to complete the chart independently. Then they would join with a learning partner to compare their mind maps and add any missing details. The next day we would complete the same mind map as a whole class and display it until the unit was over.

In the beginning of the school year, I have the students develop a vision statement. The class starts with a question of: Why do we come to school? Once we have a few answers on the board, students vote or rate, which one they think is the best answer or what they agree with. Then we break that down to find the language and the reasoning to defend that ‘why’.
Next, we use all of the language generated to form a statement; then we take this vision statement and post it in the classroom.

We recite our vision statement, as a class, as a reminder of why we come to school. I am then able to use this to develop classroom expectations, procedures, etc..

I like the idea of doing this digitally as opposed to on chart paper or on the board.

In my math class for geometry there is a lot of vocabulary that they need to learn. I enjoy creating different organizers for each student to work on and be able to visualize what they are learning. With this iBrainstorm organizer, I am able to take the different types of triangles, and organize them by their sides and angles. I would either have cut outs of each triangle for them to match within each box or I would have them draw it in each box! This allows me to see how well they are understanding each vocab term.

This would be a super easy way for kids to begin their initial draft of their road trip.

Brief Explanation of Classroom Use

I used Popplet to create a mind map on multiplication strategies for my 4th-grade math class. The mind map helps students visualize different ways to solve multiplication problems and understand how the strategies are connected. During instruction, I would use the map as a reference while introducing each strategy. Students could then create their own mind maps to solve multiplication problems and explain which strategy they chose and why.
