 Nice, fuller sound created by producers like Phil Spector who used the technique of “the Wall of Sound”

 There was a lot of rhythmic accompaniment like tambourines, clackers, and hand claps

 Was less bubblegum than teen idol music. So had more complexity to its sound and lyrics.

 The sound was also very precise and perfect like the teen idol music, it carried the same music process as the teen idols, Brill Building.

Before the rise of girl groups, there was a lot of teen idols being put out into the public eye. The flooding of male teen idols made music industries want to cleanse out the industry by introducing girl groups to release the crowdedness.

Backup vocals with harmonies and etc were an influence to the girl groups.

This era is important to music’s history because the ambitiousness of producers like Phil Spector, with the “Wall of Sound” technique and differentiating the bridge from the whole song, were influential to the music that followed this.

 Music from girl groups were very commercial and manufactured, but the work and techniques used for these songs were very important in music’s history because it has not been done before in Rock n Roll.

Brill Building

• With the transition after the “day that music died”, the big companies gained control over the music industry and its consumers. The big companies turned everything about music being freedom to being manufactured machine-like. 
• In this building, many songwriters and studio musicians are housed in cubicles and are required to have a song prepared at any time needed. 
  • A lot of the songs sounded the same because the cubicles were not soundproof, so the pianos, instrument, singing and etc can be heard through all the walls of the building.
• The singers of the songs had very little to no input in the songs they sang. 
• This practice took out the fun in music, it made music into a strict business.

Although the girls were just as restricted as the male teen idols, the female artists usually had more singing skills than the teen idols so the music created for them was more complex and musically challenging than the teen idol music.

Phil Spector was the most popular and important producer for girl groups at the time.

• He created was came to be known as “The Wall of Sound”, which was a producing technique of cramming multiple musicians, with different instruments, into a small recording room and having them play at the same time.
  • This created a big, overpowering sound that blended with one another and made the song feel more blended.
    • A song with this technique is “Be My Baby” by the Ronettes

The female artists in the groups were usually interchangeable.

• Many artists in the groups were switched out and in the case of the girl group The Crystals, the whole group can be replaced. 

Most of the artists in girl groups were African American teen girls with little experience.
