Dan's C1.1 Class: Listicle for volunteer opportunities for young people

In Unit 3, you learned about the benefits of volunteering, not only for the community but also for yourself. It can also be a great way to meet people in your new environment. Create a listicle to be included on the school’s academic website with suggestions for volunteering opportunities in your current city. Or, if you prefer, create a listicle with ideas for international volunteering.

Learning outcomes:

Improve your English by using it in a realistic task on the topic of volunteering.

Practise your research skills in English.

Develop your creativity and written communication skills.

You will be assessed on:

Organization and format: Are your ideas well structured? Is the format suitable?

Content: Do you have good and interesting ideas? Are they well chosen and researched?

Language: Have you used language related to volunteering correctly? Is your grammar, punctuation, and spelling correct? Is your writing style and tone suitable?

1.

Research examples of listicles online and make notes. You can find information about what they are and how to write them here or here.

2.

Decide whether you will focus on local volunteering opportunities or international ones. Write notes on tips and suggestions you find useful and helpful. You can google ‘local volunteering opportunities’ or ‘global volunteering opportunities’, or, in the UK and the US, you can check here and here. Check here and here for international opportunities.

Some questions and focus topics you might want to consider:

What are you most interested in—helping people (children, seniors, etc.) or working on projects (like Habitat for Humanity, for example)?

What will be of most interest to fellow classmates?

Do you enjoy tutoring and teaching?

What about community gardening or similar?

What about food services (making care packages, helping in soup kitchens, etc.)?

Have you any more ideas of your own?

3.

Plan your listicle. Decide whether you want to address local or global volunteering. Aim to write about between five and ten suggestions. Try to include a variety of examples. Then, decide in which order you want to discuss them. You can choose whether to include photos or graphics. If you want to use images, you can find some ++here++.

4.

Write or design your listicle using software of your choice. Remember to give each suggestion a number, a title, and to write at least one paragraph explaining in more detail. You should also write a brief introduction to the listicle, including explaining the benefits of volunteering.

5.

When you have finished your listicle, check through it to make sure there are no spelling or grammar mistakes, then email it to daniel.king@ef.com

Write a blog post about unusual hobbies you think people should try.

1.

Do you know any unusual hobbies? Brainstorm ideas and write them down.
