Here is an old family photo I had found recently before finding Antonia Showering’s work I found it quite funny it’s quite a strange photo and so it reminded me of ‘Green Eggs’ the painting from the exhibition at the white cube. I’m not sure exactly why it reminded me of her work however I found the way I was sat on the left eating similar to the baby in her painting.

Here’s two paintings I looked at while trying to paint my piece in response to Antonia’s work as I wanted to go out of my comfort zone, in the past i’ve previously stuck to a monochrome style and since starting uni i really wanted to get out of my bubble of only thinking I can do one type of work and take risks. The colour pallets she uses feels very gentle and soft the greens feel unusual yet safe and warm in a way i’ve never felt before. I found it really hard to make work in response as I went through so many versions hating them all.

Here’s a drawing of the photo of me and my cousin which I found and it brought me back to Showering’s work. In the past i’ve mainly worked from film images and stills and i find that drawing quickly from films I watch and then layering them and making pieces like that has been something i’ve done a lot, it’s something I find very comfortable and it’s in the boundary of things I like to paint from as i don’t have to be particular. However with Antonia Showering’s work I really did struggle to paint and use a similar colour pallet as it was such a foreign thing for me and was not at all what i’m used to. when I do use colour its quite subtle and I find it hard to break out of a box and use certain colours for different things which is something I tried in response to her work. I struggled a lot and got extremely frustrated and was very hard on myself however I really do like her work and towards the end found it quite nice using these colours and found elements in the painting I really liked.

Here’s some drawings I made when I was doubting my self and my talents as I was going to completely change my ideas and work on a painting response to Curtis Welteroth as last year I really fell in love with his unique style of work although in making this response i did want to go out of my comfort zone as i really enjoy the feeling and look of Antonia Showering’s work and all her work feels very comforting and vulnerable in a way and she’s an artist i found last year and really wanted to take inspiration from and never did.

This was my first original response which I absolutely hated and thought about scrapping the idea completely however I did end up re painting over this and still it’s not my favourite however I think that I really went on a journey with this response, there was such a range of emotion as during the holidays I didn’t make much work and here and there made pieces however this start was a lot. Especially starting with something completely different it was a big change

Here is my first response which took a long time to get to and was something I really struggled with however I don’t know whether I like it or hate it there’s definitely elements I do like specifically the colour around the baby (me) in the painting and the feeling around the baby the person on the right went through so many versions it’s crazy however I do think I like the way she now looks. The underneath was painted with acrylic and gouache and I then went over in this painting with oils and I think you’re really able to tell the difference.

Showering’s work is a link in the invisible chain of expressionist painters. Her washes may owe allegiance to the colour field Abstract Expressionists of the 60s for example Mark Rothko, Michael Barnett Newman and Helen Frankenthaller. Her pallets and loose representation shows influences of Neo-Expressionists like Peter Doig, Daniel Richter or Anselm Kiefer. But ultimately, despite influences and inherited traits, Showering’s work is her own. With quiet intimacy, her works explore an internal world of moments lost in time like painterly snapshots from a family photographer. With diffused melancholy, Showering’s paintings elevate the mundane. Homely otherworldly colours, make the every-day alien, forcing a second, a third, a fourth look.

Showering’s use of colour is what initially got me interested and inspired by her work as it’s something I’m working on in my own practice is my use of colour and how it impacts the painting.

here’s what i ended up on decided to paint where it’s a series of motifs from her work however with additional things from my own ideas. for example i recently rewatched Marie Antoinette which is where i got the idea for the naked figure from that and based it off of the scene where she’s getting undressed. i mixed the idea of Ziqi’s balcony with my figure to change things around and added some of my favourite things from her work to make it feel almost like a collaboration. i really enjoyed making this and coming up with different ideas, my favourite thing that come out of this is the head through the entrance as i think it it’s unlike a lot of what i’ve painted and i kind of just wanted to have fun with it.

This piece is called ‘Walk Me To The Entrance’ i really liked this work of Ziqi’s because she continues a symbol of entrances and openings within her work which is something i think i will take on in my work moving forward i really enjoy her use of washes and the way she apples the paint im really able to feel the air in this picture and the space feels open and the air feels misty.
