Advertisements are a way to draw a consumer into a product. They are visually pleasing and give you limited information on what the advertisement is. They can take many forms, including pictures, posters, videos, or written captions. You might see them on billboards, scrolling on Facebook, or posted on the window of the fast-food place down the block.

Typical Moves in Writing An Advertisement

Advertisements contain minimal information about the product to push consumers to seek out information on their own. Due to the limited words you can put in an advertisement, you have to choose wisely on what you say. This video shows some typical moves we see in advertisements:
- catchphrase
-simple description
- where to purchase
- what the product claims to do
-humor
-positive adjectives (beautiful, radiant, etc)

How Advertisements Do Their Work

Advertisements use those typical moves discussed earlier to draw in consumers. They should be humorous and witty, and overall display the product in a very bright light. They should display enough information to understand the product at first glance, but not enough that distracts from the visual aesthetic. As discussed before, the idea is for the consumer to seek more information on the product, which leads to a higher probability of a sale. Advertisements do their work by displaying a product and leading the consumer to learn more about it.

Since advertisements want consumers to seek out more information about a product, they can't be too text heavy. Too much text can overall kill the visual aesthetic.

Advertisements can choose to include wit and humor in their advertisements. Coca-Cola and Pepsi are infamous for their witty digs at each other's opposing products. In the example above, the Pepsi can is wearing a Coca-Cola sort of cape. The caption of this advertisement says "We wish you a scary Halloween."

Advertisements are trying to sell a product so their language can be very versatile. Some common language features you can see are:
-descriptive
-informal
-humorous

In the photo pictured above, some of these language features are highlighted. In this specific advertisement, informal writing is used in a humorous way.

In the article pictured above, it states we see around 5,000 advertisements a day. At a number this high, are advertisements even doing their job anymore? Since we see so many a day, we are used to seeing them. To not be put in the category of the 5,000 advertisements seen a day, something new and refreshing needs to happen to an ad in order for it to stand out. The use of creativity can break an ad from being hidden in the thousands of surrounding advertisements.
