Main idea #1 Government Regulation

I feel that the industrial revolution and the progressive era show how much regulation is needed. It really shows how important the government is in daily life, because of how many bad things were happening to farmers and businesses. Without regulation farmers got overpriced, men, women, and children worked for 40+ hour work weeks, and businesses got swallowed by bigger corporations. I believe that without regulation in the industrial revolution the world would be much worse because of polution, monopolies, and harsh working conditions.

Henry Bessemer is one of the most influential men in history. Bessemer is so important because his steel has evolved to being used all around the globe. Without steel we wouldn't have most of our building and bridges. Steel is lighter and stronger than iron and that is why it is used so much more in almost every building we make. Without Henry Bessemer the world we live in would be much further behind than where we are right now.

I feel that monopolies and government relate to my siblings within my house. The reason behind this is because if there were no parents older siblings would take over and be super strict. I relate this to monopolies and government because I see the government in my parents. The parents regulate the rules and control the siblings. Without the parents the older siblings would over take the house and rule it, but because of parents there's always a higher power.

Personally my favorite part of the unit was learning what happened because of the industrial revolution and why those things happened. My favorite thing was the amount of environmental issues for example, the Cyahoga River catching on fire. I also enjoyed hearing about the amount of political tension due to big businesses after the industrial revolution. Such as the railroads overcharging and then the farmers coming out and taking charge. Lastly I enjoyed learning about the inventors that thrived because of the industrial revolution like, Edwin Drake, and Henry Bessemer.

My new vocab word from this section is Philanthropist. A Philanthropist is a generous person who gives back to others. The most famous philanthropist from this era was Andrew Carnegie. One great example of why he was a philanthropist was that he opened over 2,000 libraries. Philanthropist's love humanity more than themselves and that's why they are such amazing people.

Main idea #2 Humanity is destructive

I get this main idea from the industrial revolution due to the amount of destruction from humans. In the industrial revolution it brought super bad pollution which harmed the earth. Another destructive move by the humans were that they killed nearly all of the buffalo in the West, whereas before there were a plentiful amount. Big Business also destroyed smaller companies by consuming them and creating monopolies.

Andrew Carnegie played a big role in the industrial revolution as a big business man and a philanthropist. Carnegie made it big in the steel industry. With his company and the economy booming his product helped create many amazing skyscrapers and bridges. He believed that early in life is meant to acquire as much knowledge as possible. As he thought this, he opened many libraries for the public. He now has a college named after him.
