Hi and assalammualaikum everyone! On the first week, we were having a ta'aruf session with our facilitator, which was sister Farisyah. We were asked to describe three words about ourselves as an introduction to all the usrah members. It was quite a nervous week since we had to initiate ourselves to be friends with someone whom we just met! However, it was a fun and intrigue experience for me as now I have finally made so many friends from my usrah class!

Right after the ta'aruf session, sister Farisyah proceed to talk about adab in seeking knowledge.

First of all,

What is adab?

Adab is an islamic etiquette of having good manners and character.

Prophet's wife, Aisyah R.A once said:

"His character was the Quran."

Which means, HE refers to prophet Muhammad SAW. Whatever the Quran says about prophet Muhammad SAW, those are his characters. We may not know about prophet Muhammad, but we can imagine prophet Muhammad himself based on the informations in Quran.

In surah Al-Qalam verse 68, ayah 4:

"مٍيظِعَ قٍلُخُ لَىٰعَلَ كَنَّإِوَ"

"And you are truly an excellent standard of character."

Prophet Muhammad SAW once said:

"I was sent to perfect good character."

(Sahih Muslim)

"The most perfect/complete believers in faith is he who is the best of them in manners."

(Sunan At-Tirmizi)

Adam towards Allah SWT and Prophet Muhammad SAW:

Quran is recited

Listening to hadeeth

Adhan being called

Adab in daily lives:

Waking up

Eating and drinking

Meeting people

Sleeping

Benefits of having Adab:

Beloved by the Prophet Muhammad SAW

Receive Allah's love and forgiveness

Preserve good relationship with others

Seven golden etiquettes for seekers of knowledge:

Sincere intention

Study with ihsaan

Exhibit tawakkul

Eliminate bad habits

Make dua to Allah SWT

Thank Allah SWT

Istighfaar and dhikrullah

That's all for today, thank you.

Al-Quran:

It is the literal word of God, revealed over many years, to His final prophet, Muhammad SAW

[Al- baqarah ; 2]

This is the Book! The Prophet, who was unable to read or write, replied 'I do not know

how to read'.

The angel held him so hard that he could not bear the pressure then released Muhammad and asked him once more to read. Until one day, the angel Jibrael ‘on a throne between the Heavens and the Earth’. At this the prophet began to tremble in fear – despite his desire to meet with the angel – and he ran back into his house to Khadija (RA) and told her, ‘Cover me up cover me up,’

ﻳَـٰ ٓﺄَﻳﱡﻬ َ ا ٱﻟْﻤ ُ ﺪﱠﺛﱢﺮُ [١] ﻗُﻢ ْ ﻓَﺄَنﺬِرْ [٢]

“O you covered in garments arise and warn the people of a severe punishment...“

(Surah Al-Mudaththir)

Conclusion:

Allah SWT. has revealed Al-Qur’an to the Prophet SAW as a book of guidance towards the ummah. It contains teachings and guidance for Muslims on how to live their lives. It guides in leading to spiritual and somatic health for the individual. Following God's orders and reciting verses from the Quran will help us to lead a healthy lifestyle.

That’s all for today. Thank you.

WEEK 2: HADITH JIBRIL

In today's class, we were discussing about Hadith Jibril.

The significance of this Hadith:

This hadith includes within it all

outwardly actions [Rukun Islam]

inwardly beliefs [Rukun Iman]

The hadith tells the story of Jibreel (as) when he came to the Prophet,

asking a set of questions.

There is a door called “Baab Jibreel” at Masjid An-Nabawi in Madina. It is

known as the door that Jibreel (as) came in to ask the Prophet (sas) these

questions.

Etiquette:

Jibreel (as) came dressed in a very nice and clean way. He sat in front of the Prophet (pbuh) in a very respectful and humble way.

Students should have decent apparel, they should look clean as much as possible. Moreover, they should show a high level of respect towards their teachers.

Outward actions and inward beliefs:

Islam and iman are interchangeable concepts revolved around the five pillars of action and the six foundations of belief.

The Prophet (sas) said that the Muslim is the person who the people are safe from his hands and his tongue. And the believer is the one who people

trust him with their wealth and themselves.

The big three: ISLAM, IMAN, IHSAN

First level (ISLAM)

-force yourself and bring yourself to do those actions which you know that Allah wants you to do.

Second level (IMAN)

-strengthening your relationship with Allah (SWT)

-beginning to taste the sweetness of your relationship with Allah

Third level (IHSAN)

-worship Allah as if you see Him, and even if you cannot see Him, to know that He sees you

The hour:

This is something that Allah (swt) keeps to Himself and it is part of the “ghayb” (unseen).

It doesn’t matter when the Day of Judgment is as we should be continuously striving to please Allah and seek his forgiveness.

The signs:

“THE SLAVE WOMAN WILL GIVE BIRTH TO HER MASTER”

The one who gives birth is supposed to be in power or have some sort of level of authority over the one to whom she gives birth. The child would respect, honor, and listen to their parents.

Instead, the one who gives birth becomes the servant of the one who is born. Parents desperately trying to please their children.

"PERSON WILL SEE BAREFOOTED, LIGHTLY DRESSED, AND POOR PEOPLE WHO ARE SHEPHERDS"

People who don’t have anything, they are very poor suddenly the situation changes for them, and they are competing with one another over who can build the tallest building.

Bounty of Allah:

In the end, all of this is from the blessings of Allah (SWT). We still have to acknowledge that no matter how much effort we put in, our wealth and success will always be in the hands and bounty of Allah. Being successful and having wealth should give us more reasons to increase our humility and increase our gratitude.

Conclusion:

Ḥadīth Jibrīl is a hadith of the Islamic prophet Muhammad (the last prophet of Islam) which concisely expresses the religion of Islam.[1] It is believed to contain a summary of the core of the religion of Islam, which are:

Islām (إسالم), which is described with the "Five Pillars of Islam"

Īmān (إيمان), which is described with the "Six Articles of Faith,"

Iḥsān (إحسان), or "doing what is beautiful,"

al-Sā’ah (الساعة), or The Hour, which is not described, but its

signs are given.

That's all for today. After their messenger has come, judgment is passed on them in all fairness, and they are not wronged.

BELIEF IN QIYAMAH

Qiyamah (the day of judgement):

Belief in qiyamah is one of the principles of Islamic Faith and many verses of the Qur'an devoted to this topic. It is when "all bodies will be resurrected" from the dead, and "all people" are "called to account" for their deeds and their faith during their life on Earth. It has been called "the dominant message" of the holy book of Islam, the Qur'an, Resurrection and judgement - the two themes "central to the understanding of Islamic eschatology." Judgement Day is considered a fundamental tenet of faith by all Muslims, and one of the six articles of Islamic faith.

Key beliefs:

Belief in resurrection

-Muslims believe that after death, every individual will be resurrected on the Day of Judgment, regardless of their status, creed, or beliefs. This resurrection will

occur when Allah commands it, and all humanity will be brought back to life from their graves.

The scales of deeds

-Muslims believe that on the Day of Judgment, their deeds will be weighed on a scale (Mizan) to determine their worth and righteousness. Good deeds will be

rewarded, while evil deeds will be accounted for and may result in punishment.

Accountability

-On the Day of Judgment, every individual will be held accountable for their beliefs, actions, and intentions during their earthly life. Allah, the Just and Merciful, will judge each person fairly and impartially, weighing their deeds and intentions against the standards of divine justice.

The books of deeds

-Muslims believe that every person’s actions and deeds are recorded by angels throughout their life. These records will be presented on the Day of Judgment, and individuals will be judged based on their deeds as recorded in the Books of Deeds.

Intercession

-Muslims believe in the concept of intercession (Shafa’ah) on the Day of Judgment, where righteous individuals, prophets, and angels may intercede on

behalf of believers to seek Allah’s mercy and forgiveness. The ultimate intercession belongs to Allah alone.

Signs of the hour

-Muslims believe in various signs that will precede the Day of Judgment, including

moral decay, societal upheaval, and natural disasters. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.” (Surah al-Isra')

Conclusion:

To conclude, parents are a great blessing for every individual. Thus, it is the obligation of every child to take care of their parents offering the best service and care as long as they do not ask us to disobey Allah SWT.

ADAB TOWARDS NEIGHBOUR AND SOCIETY

Who is neighbour:

Neighbours are forty houses on each side, as was stated by ash-Shaafa ‘i. The rights of neighbours apply to forty houses like this and like this and like this” and he pointed to the front, to the back, to the right and to the left.

[ Narrated by Abu Dawood ]

Allah SWT says in the Quran about neighbour:

“Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and

those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are arrogant and boastful.”

Give greetings and a smile:

Prophet Muhammad SAW teaches us that a smile is an act of charity

Greeting someone with a friendly, smiling face can brighten their day and make them feel at ease.

Offer food:

Anas ibn Malik :

Prophet SAW said, “He does not have faith in me who spends the night satiated while he knows that the neighbor to his side is hungry”

He also advised one of his companions that whenever he cooked a stew, to added water to the broth to make enough to give to their neighbors (Muslim).

When you are barbecuing or cooking a spiced meal, the scent of the food reaches the people who live next door and stirs their appetite. He said to give “to the one whose door is nearer to you” (Bukhari).

Do not disturb or harm them:

The Prophet SAW said, “Anybody who believes in Allah and the Last Day should not harm his neighbor…” (Bukhari).

This harm includes anything physical, emotional, or even spiritual.

Physical harm to one’s neighbor are loud parties, offensive smells, damaging their possessions or property, or leaving uncovered trash outside.

Emotional harm can be inflicted by being rude, meddlesome, disrespectful, or abusive.

Spiritual harm can occur when we misrepresent Islam by being a bad neighbor, thus causing them to reject or even hate our religion based on our misdeeds.

Conclusion:

The concept of adab, or good manners, towards neighbors is deeply rooted in Islamic teachings and is emphasized in

various hadiths and the Quran.

Muslims are instructed to

Treat their neighbors with kindness, respect, and generosity, regardless of their religion or background.

helping them in times of need

respecting their privacy

avoiding causing them any harm

Muslims practicing adab towards their neighbors can foster stronger bonds within their communities and promote harmony and goodwill.

ADAB AS STUDENT

Prioritise the purification of his soul of blameworthy characteristics:

The Prophet’s words “Islam was built upon purity.” The Prophet ﷺ was not speaking about keeping one’s clothes pure. Rather he was speaking about the heart.

Ibn Mas’ud said, “Knowledge is not knowing a lot of narrations. It is a light

that is cast into the heart.”

It is obvious that the impurity mentioned does not refer to the clothes of the student. As long as the student does not purify his inner being of impure traits, his inner being will not accept beneficial religious knowledge, nor be illuminated through the light of knowledge.

Limit his attachments and travel away from his homeland, so that his heart will

be free for knowledge:

For Allah SWT has not placed for any man two hearts in the same breast.

That is why it has been said of knowledge, “It will not give you a part of itself, unless you give it all of you."

Avoids giving his attention to the disagreements of the people of knowledge:

“If someone visits us in our beginning stages will become a siddiq. If he visits us in our final stages, he will become an apostate.”

That is because, in the final stages of their

journey, their limbs refrain from actions,

except the obligatory acts. They replace

voluntary acts with the journey of the

heart and perpetual witnessing. And, the

negligent person will consider this to be

inaction and inoccupation.

Allah SWT said:

(You see the mountains and consider them still, even though they move like clouds) (al-Naml, 88).

Gives great concern to the most importance science: the knowledge of the Hereafter:

It mean the category of knowledge that deals with perfecting character and unveiling. The perfection of character leads to unveiling. And unveiling is gnosis of Allah SWT, which is a light that Allah سبحانه وتعاٰىل casts into a heart that has been purified by worship and struggle, having arrived at the level of the faith of Abu Bakr رضي هللا عنه, about whom it has been narrated,

“If the faith of the people of the earth were weight against the faith of Abu Bakr, the faith of Abu Bakr would outweigh it.”

That was due to a secret stored within his heart, not that which can be measured and weighed.

Does not behave haughtily before knowledge, nor command his teacher:

Rather, he should place himself under his teacher’s complete control, just as an extremely sick person submits himself completely to his doctor. The sick person does not pretend to give his doctor instructions, nor advise him on which medicine to use. It is also imperative that the student be constantly in service to his teacher.

Zayd b. Thabit رضي هللا عنه prayed a funeral

prayer, after which, an animal was brought to him so that he might ride it. Ibn رضي هللا عنه Abbas‘ came and held the animal to help Zayd b. Thabit mount the animal.

Zayd said to him, “Leave that, o cousin of the Messenger of Allah.”

Ibn 'Abbas said, “This is how we were commanded to treat the Scholars and the elders.”

So, Zayd kissed his hand and said, “This is how we were commanded to treat the People of the House of our Prophet.”

The Prophet said, “Adulation is not from the

character of the believer, except in seeking

knowledge.” It has been said that knowledge flees from an arrogant person the same way that a stream rushes from high places.

Thank you.
